HCC’S APPROACH TO PUBLIC SAFETY & HOMELESSNESS

THE HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER’S APPROACH TO PUBLIC SAFETY & HOMELESSNESS

Given the critical importance of this issue, the Chamber has taken an integrated approach to address public safety and homelessness. We work across multiple HCC initiatives and with key external partners to tackle these issues. We think this multi-pronged approach can have a far more significant impact than any single initiative or entity. To that end, this is our list of all that we do to manage these concerns and how you can get involved.

THE HOLLYWOOD POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE (PAC)
The Hollywood Chamber’s PAC works directly with elected officials like Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell to support efforts that make Hollywood cleaner and safer. The Hollywood PAC works with local, state, and federal officials on policies that help businesses grow. The PAC makes sure that we support the officials that support businesses. This election cycle is critical to the issue of public safety and homelessness, and we need to vote accordingly.

EAST HOLLYWOOD BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (EHBID)
The Hollywood Chamber devotes time, resources, and funding to the EHBID, an organization dedicated to improving Hollywood, which includes litter pick-up, sidewalk and bus stop power washing, street cleaning, and graffiti removal. Additionally, the EHBID works with partners to plant trees, improve traffic and pedestrian flow, and paint areas in Hollywood that are over and above the essential services provided by the local government.

THE HOLLYWOOD PARTNERSHIP
The Chamber continuously supports organizations like The Hollywood Partnership, whose sole mission is to provide resources for city cleanliness, safety, beautification, and economic viability. The Hollywood Partnership augments what the city and police do to protect our streets, but they are not a substitute for LA City’s fundamental law and order provision.

HOLLYWOOD 4WRD
The Chamber financially supports Hollywood 4WRD, a non-profit organization whose mission is to drive and create systemic change on homelessness in Hollywood. They also have an innovative approach that leverages advocacy, education, and service coordination.

HOLLYWOOD RIGHT NOW | NEW HCC WEBSITE DEVOTED TO HOMELESSNESS & PUBLIC SAFETY
In partnership with Kilroy, a business leader in our community, the Hollywood Chamber launched the Hollywood Right Now website. This site focuses only on providing the most current information on those community issues impacting business in Hollywood, such as public safety, homelessness, and the Hollywood Community Plan. More importantly, it offers straightforward ways individuals and organizations can take action.

THE HOLLYWOOD HISTORIC TRUST
The Hollywood Historic Trust maintains and preserves the Walk of Fame as a Hollywood Chamber subsidiary. Funds generated from the Walk of Fame repair and upkeep the stars on the iconic boulevard.

HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME
Held in the public trust, the Hollywood Chamber is a mission-led organization that promotes business. The Chamber manages the Walk of Fame because it is hugely beneficial for our business members, drives tourism to Hollywood, and is a living monument to entertainment with a global audience. Like our member businesses, the success of the Walk of Fame depends on Hollywood’s cleanliness and safety.

Although we think you will see this as a comprehensive list of the various initiatives the Chamber is leading and supporting to help keep Hollywood safe, we want to hear from you. Let us know how we can continue addressing and tackling these issues better.

A message from our Chairman Lupita Sanchez Cornejo

Dear Chamber Members:

It’s been an incredible month with many successes and new Chamber initiatives that we are excited to implement.

In June, we announced our 2023 Walk of Fame honorees in the following categories: Motion Picture, Television, Live Theatre/Performance, and Recording. Twenty-four honorees were selected from hundreds of nominations and ratified by the Hollywood Chamber’s Board of Directors. Radio personality and Walk of Famer Ellen K. is the Chair of the Walk of Fame Selection Panel and announced the 2023 honorees live at walkoffame.com on Friday, June 17, 2022.

The Walk of Fame Selection Panel is made up of Walk of Famers who hand-pick a group of honorees each year representing various genres within the entertainment industry. The Selection Panel thoughtfully selected these incredible honorees, and we look forward to celebrating them as they become part of Hollywood’s history.

HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME | CLASS OF 2023

MAY – JUNE 2022

A message from our President & CEO, David Michael Jerome

Happy fourth of July! We are thankful for this great nation, all the sacrifices that have made it great, and those who have continued to keep it great.

The recent primary election results are an important signal that we cannot just hope things will work out. Although we have a shared sense that business in Hollywood is improving, these gains can be reversed at the ballot box. Important issues to business success, like crime reduction, mental health, and economic development, are in the balance. Elections matter more now than ever, so get involved and encourage others to do so.

The Chamber and its Political Action Committee (PAC) are fully engaged in promoting the law-and-order agenda. We just launched an essential new website with Kilroy, dedicated to law-and-order issues in the community (Hollywood Right Now). We also collaborate with the Police, the Hollywood Business Improvement District, and groups like Hollywood Forward. Additionally, we work with Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell to support his initiatives related to crime and the rule of law. Check out our endorsed candidates (link) and vote – our continued growth depends on it.

Beyond our advocacy efforts, I am pleased to report that the team is making a difference in our business community. Working with BET, the sign was illuminated for the first time in over 20 years to overwhelming acclaim. We could not have done this without the outstanding support of board member Jerry Neuman, the Licensing Committee, and the Sign Trust. We continue to deliver on the Walk of Fame and just announced our fabulous incoming class of 2023. Moreover, we are adding just the right level of process and targets to ensure we can sustainably manage return on membership. We continue to grow to meet the business demands of our expanding membership and the Hollywood community. We have mapped our key processes and committees and now have scorecards to track our progress. As a result, we are reinforcing our culture of proactivity, achievement, and working together for you, our members.

Even in advance of the current inflationary challenges, the Chamber sought to assist our local businesses across various business issues. However, inflation has now led to adding costs to payrolls and supply chains. As of publication, consumer prices were growing the fastest in forty years. The Consumer Price Index was at 8.6% above its May 2021 level. To assist with this challenging business environment, we are redoubling our business development efforts, especially for small businesses. In July, we are launching a new business coaching effort. We do this with the sponsorship of our chairman, whose leadership in this area has been critical to starting this important initiative. The Chamber receives a vast number of business inquiries every day, and by tracking these requests, we can shape our business development efforts to meet the needs of Hollywood’s businesses. We will communicate more on this after the July 4th Holiday.

Best,

David

The Hollywood Chamber’s PAC initiative advocates for businesses in Hollywood

Hollywood Chamber Political Action Committee:

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce works to ensure the business community in our region is thriving, and the voice of business is elevated. One of the greatest tools in our efforts to accomplish those goals is the Hollywood Chamber Political Action Committee (PAC). The mission of the Hollywood Chamber PAC is to support and elect business-friendly candidates who align with our vision and goals. Our political action committee serves as the political strength of the entire Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and its members.

Through the strategic work of the PAC, we are able to provide support for candidates who show their ability to provide common-sense solutions to issues facing our City today and who take into account the delicate balance of worker protections and employer support. It is critical for Chambers of Commerce to lean into their Political Action Committees and support the work they do, which in turn will strengthen the entire business community.

Endorsing candidates and putting money behind those endorsements can mean the difference between a business-friendly candidate being elected or re-elected and a candidate who does not understand the complexities of keeping Angelenos employed and allowing our business community to thrive. Policies at City Hall, the County Hall of Administration, and in Sacramento are introduced every day, and it is more imperative than ever to have elected officials in office who understand the important role our Chamber has in keeping our businesses’ doors open and enabling our employers to keep providing good-paying jobs in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Chamber PAC has worked diligently to build a strong board, raise funds to help support our goals, and endorse candidates we believe will further the goals of employers and ensure businesses of all sizes are able to recover from the pandemic. Our work to strengthen the influence and reach of the Chamber’s PAC is critical to the day to day operations as a Chamber of Commerce as the Chamber’s staff and members meet with public officials, their staff, and those who have a direct impact on the laws, rules, and regulations that impact Chamber members and our broader business community.

Board Chair

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee

A Message from Immediate Past Chairman, Nicole Mihalka:

Dear Members of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce,

What a year it has been!

When I started off at the beginning of this historic 100th anniversary year of the Hollywood Chamber, I shared how thrilled and humbled I was to become Chair of the Board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.  As we bid this fiscal year adieu, I still feel the same sense of awe to have led this incredible organization in the world’s most famous community.

A dream come true: 20 years in the making.  My beginnings in Hollywood were humble, to be sure!   After graduating from college, I moved across the country to a tiny apartment at the corner of Franklin and La Brea.   After a couple of years of barely making ends meet, I serendipitously landed in commercial real estate.  Without any business connections, I joined the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and quickly formed a meaningful network.  I even sold my first listing through a connection I made at the Economic Development Committee.  Since that time, my team has helped attract, retain and expand many of Hollywood’s most significant stakeholders.   Through it all, the people and connections I have made through the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, including the staff, the board, and many of its members, have become family.

This last year brought us many unprecedented challenges in Hollywood, including navigating re-entry through Delta and Omicron surges.   We were also faced with a leadership transition and the search for a new CEO.   With the support of our incredible staff and board leadership, I quickly leaned in and assumed many of the duties of the CEO position as a volunteer.  Thankfully our past President and CEO of 26 years, Leron Gubler, was gracious enough to return from retirement to serve as our President Emeritus during the CEO search process.    Kudos to Leron (and his family) for accepting the call to duty – we couldn’t have done this without you!   Huge shout out to my husband Marty (we met in Hollywood and celebrated our 10th anniversary this year) and our little ones Pierce and Stevie, who supported me on this journey, even when I spent most of our family vacation dealing with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce business! Not to mention my incredible colleagues at JLL, including Carl, Capriccia, Caitlyn, Dana, Carl, Hayley, and Pete, aka Team Hollywood, who continue to shine as the best commercial real estate team in the business.  Thank you all!

Even through our most challenging times, we emerged with many bright moments:

  • We hired a new CEO: visionary business leader David Michael Jerome.  His commitment to transforming businesses and improving lives will help us elevate the Hollywood experience for all. He starts on April 18th, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Hollywood with his leadership!
  • Hollywood Walk of Fame:  After a long hiatus due to COVID, our incredible team led by Walk of Fame Producer Ana Martinez and Director of Business Development Lily Weiner, we brought back live ceremonies to Hollywood Boulevard.   We celebrated over 20 Walk of Fame recipients:  Highlights included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Missy Elliot, Daniel Craig, Salma Hayek, and Francis Ford Coppola.   If you haven’t checked it out yet, our own President Emeritus Leron Gubler wrote the book on it – Walk of Dreams (click here to get it from Amazon today!).   Another fun way to enjoy our Walk of Famers – is this Spotify playlist.  We couldn’t be more proud of this world-famous landmark that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created over 60 years ago!
  • Hollywood Sign:   After the historic L.A. Rams Super Bowl win, the Hollywood Sign was temporarily transformed into “Rams House.”  This was an unprecedented achievement requiring coordination with multiple City agencies and the Hollywood Sign Trust.  Many thanks to our new Vice-Chair of Licensing, Jerry Neuman, for his outstanding leadership in this effort.
  • New Members:  Even in uncertain times, the Hollywood Chamber created value for businesses of all sizes. We welcomed 142 new members – including 27 in March 2022 alone.  This is close to 2x the number of members that joined in the previous year!  Of our many new amazing members, we are happy to announce that the L.A. Rams and L.A. Kings have joined.  Thank you to our VP of Membership Lex Pavlovic for your continued dedication and success.
  • In-Person Events:   With great care and coordination, we re-introduced in-person membership events, including mixer and lunch hustles.  We also hosted the State of Hollywood event, our first premiere event since February 2020.  Thank you to Executive Vice President Kaylee Kiecker and Director of Events Chloe Kim for working tirelessly to bring our members these much-anticipated event experiences.
  • Advocacy and Redistricting:  The core business areas of Hollywood were in jeopardy of being redistricted out of Council District 13.  Concerned about losing the momentum of positive development that has been championed by CD 13 Councilman Mitch O’Farrell, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce quickly mobilized to advocate on behalf of Hollywood businesses during the Redistricting process.  We are happy to report that not only we were successful in maintaining the core business areas, but additional business areas were added to CD13.   I also want to give a shout-out to staffer Noelani Leal, who has been outstanding in keeping our economic development and legislative action efforts on track.
  • Political Action:  Our Chamber Political Action Committee, chaired by Aaron Green, continues its work to review all area races and to endorse candidates who advocate for policies benefitting our membership.
  • Hollywood Community Foundation:  Chair Dwayne Gathers and the Community Foundation held a very successful (albeit virtual) Heroes of Hollywood event, which raised money that allowed the Foundation to give out $48,500 in grants to 26 Hollywood nonprofits.
  • LA Pride:   We are so excited to have L.A. Pride back to its home in Hollywood this year, with the Pride Parade happening on Sunday, June 12th.   This year’s theme is Love Your Pride, and we proudly welcome and celebrate our LGBTQ+ community during LA Pride week and all year round!

Now we enter a new chapter in our Hollywood story. I am honored to “pass the gavel” to my friend and fellow Hollywood Chamber of Commerce leader, Lupita Sanchez Cornejo.  Not only has she built an impressive career at AT&T for the past 20 years, but she has been a wonderful partner during these challenging times.   She is also an incredible inspiration as a working mother and champion for diverse communities as Lupita becomes the first woman of color and first Latino/a to chair the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in its 100-year history.   I am confident that with Lupita’s leadership, we will continue to advance a dynamic business climate and elevate the Hollywood experience for all!

Thank you for your continued membership. I have been honored to serve this community, which also happens to be the world’s most famous location, brand, and state of mind: Hollywood.
