Helen Bernstein Senior High School will open its doors to the students of Los Angeles in the Fall of 2008. A scholarship wall in memory of former United Teachers Los Angeles president Helen Bernstein – our school’s namesake - will stand at the entrance to the school next to a large plaque memorializing her life. We think you will be interested in making a contribution towards the scholarship wall. Full tiles can be purchased for $100 and half tiles can be purchased for $50, but please feel free to donate beyond the minimum contributions. Donors who give $1000 or more will be honored on the wall with a special recognition. Seventy percent of the proceeds from your purchase will go toward the Helen Bernstein Scholarship Fund, which will award college scholarships to seniors at HBSH. The remaining 30% will go toward the engraving, shipping and installation of the tiles. The names, dedications and words you choose to engrave on your tile will become part of the HBSH’s legacy for generations to come. For more information about purchasing a tile or to order a tile, please go to: http://www.bricksrus.com/order/bernstein

Unique Events at the Autry National Museum

Wednesday, July 23 | Workshops on Sign Regulations
The City of Los Angeles invites you to a public workshop concerning sign regulations in the Hollywood Sign District and Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Hollywood Project Area.  We hope you are able to attend on one of the scheduled dates and give us your input regarding future signage in the Hollywood area.  There is no need to register or RSVP, just come as you are and share your ideas with us! The guidelines for signs in the area are designed to promote appropriate signage in Hollywood that would contribute to the area's image as an entertainment destination, while limiting the visual impacts of signage on residents and historic buildings. The Planning Department and the CRA review individual applications for signage in an effort to limit visual clutter and enhance the major transportation corridors in Hollywood.  The City is currently reviewing and revising our guidelines; these workshops are being held in order to gather public input about what sort of changes residents and other stakeholders would like to see relating to signage in their area.

HollyWould..., the theme for this year’s festival, is a playful and evocative turn on Hollywood, both as an international symbol of the American entertainment industry and as a Los Angeles neighborhood very much in flux. The free festival challenges preconceived notions of where art belongs: tattoo parlors, adult-entertainment and electronics stores, bars and restaurants, and trendy clothing boutiques between Wilcox and La Brea.
