City Council Approves Long-Awaited Parking Garage

The Los Angeles City Council approved plans last Friday for a long-awaited parking garage to be built on Vine Street in Hollywood.  Nicole Shahenian, the Hollywood Chamber’s Vice President of Public Policy, was on hand to show the Chamber’s continued support for the project.  The $21-million project will include a 457-space parking structure with a 2,600-sq.ft. ground floor retail component.  It will be built adjacent to the Ricardo Montalban Theatre.  The concept and design were originally approved by the City in 2002, but financial issues kept the project from moving forward.  The Department of Transportation is contributing $15.2-million from the City’s Special Parking Revenue Fund for the project.  The Community Redevelopment Agency has agreed to kick in an additional $4-million to close the funding gap.  Construction is expected to begin by next spring.  The Chamber expresses appreciation to Council President Eric Garcetti, to the Mayor’s Business Team and to the Community Redevelopment Agency for helping to resolve the funding issues.  The garage is expected to help alleviate a severe parking shortage along the Cahuenga corridor and help replace parking lost by the construction of several developments in the area.

Hollywood’s First Permanent Supportive Housing Project Approved by City

Last week the City Council unanimously approved the Community Redevelopment Agency’s (CRA) proposed Villas at Gower permanent supportive housing project. The LEED-Gold certified project envisions construction of a four-story, 70-unit housing complex which will bring homes to those in the Hollywood community who are most in need  - single adults, families with children, and transitional age youth who were homeless, including a portion having special needs. The Villas at Gower will respond to the unique needs of these Hollywood residents by providing essential services including intensive case management that will connect residents to the full range of support services they need to gain increased independence and remain stably housed. On August 7th, the Chamber’s vice president of public policy, Nicole Shahenian spoke before the Community Redevelopment Agency in support of the proposed Villas at Gower project.  Shahenian testified that the Villas at Gower are an important step in the right direction for addressing homelessness in the Hollywood community.  As part of the Chamber’s ongoing work to address homelessness in Hollywood, the Chamber has joined with a coalition of Hollywood business and community leaders to find innovative approaches to combat homelessness in Hollywood, known as the Hollywood Business Roundtable on Homelessness. For further information on the Villas at Gower project or how to get involved the Hollywood Business Roundtable on Homelessness please contact the Chamber’s Vice President of Public Policy, Nicole Shahenian at Nicole@hollywoodchamber.net or at 323-468-1373.
