Chamber Presented Overview of Millennium Hollywood Project

Chamber officials met with representatives of Argent Ventures and Millennium Partners last week for the first of what will be a series of community outreach meetings by the firms to explain their proposed development.  The project, which will represent a $1-billion investment in Hollywood, would surround the Capitol Records Tower and occupy parcels on both sides of Vine Street.  Phil Aarons of Millennium Partners described the project as an extraordinary opportunity to create a signature project for Hollywood that would provide a new gathering place for locals and visitors.  The proposed design includes extensive open space and water features.  The 4.5-acre project would have a 200-room boutique hotel, 100,000-sq.ft. of office space, a sports and fitness center and about 500 condominiums.  Also included would be an observation deck.  An 18-month entitlement process is anticipated before construction could begin.  Chamber officials offered suggestions and invited the companies to go through the formal review process that the Chamber has established in considering whether to endorse projects.  The Economic Development Committee is tentatively scheduled to review the project in October.

Hollywood Crime Update by Cpt. Clayton Farrell

A quick update on our Hollywood crime-for the year-to-date (YTD), Part I Crime [Homicide, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assaults, Burglary, Auto Theft, Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicle (BTMV) and Personal Theft] is down 13.7 percent compared to 2007. Hollywood continues to lead the entire City in Part I crime reduction. Violent crime is down 18 percent and property crime is down 12.4 percent. Notably, gang crime is down 42 percent and the number of shooting victims is down 33 percent.

The most prevalent crime continues to be BTMV; Hollywood experienced 150 BTMV crimes in the last four weeks. We are down 10.6 percent in BTMV crimes in 2008. The most prevalent violent crime is robbery, although we are down 18.6 percent YTD.

Your Hollywood officers are continuing to perform in a proactive manner; officers average making over 1,000 arrests each month. The response time to emergency radio calls is 5.2 minutes compared to the City average of 6.3 minutes and Hollywood's response time to priority radio calls is 15.1 minutes compared to the City average of 17.6 minutes. Arrests for weapon violations are up 16 percent, a fact which is demonstrative of our continuing focus upon the most violent of criminals.

Regarding Department-wide issues, 62 recruit officers were hired on July 21, 2008, which was the first class for Fiscal Year 08/09. Fiscal year 07/08 concluded with the hiring of 739 recruit officers; the goal for FY08/09 is 780 officers.

The Hollywood Police Activities League (PAL) dinner is scheduled for September 25 at the world famous Music Box @ Fonda. The premier PAL program consists of over 350 youth members and is a showcase example of the benefits of community, youth and police department partnership. Information regarding sponsorship, tables and tickets may be obtained at (818)994 4661.
