Chamber Testifies at City Planning Commission Hearing on Proposed Selma Ave, Hotel Project

The Chambers vice president of public policy, Nicole Shahenian spoke last week before the Los Angeles City Planning Commission in support of the proposed Selma Avenue Hotel Project. Shahenian testified that the proposed hotel represents an excellent example of infill development that will help to revitalize Selma Avenue and bring much needed hotel rooms to Hollywood - one of the most visited parts of Los Angeles. For the past two years, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has had a boutique hotel committee, working to attract new hotels to Hollywood. The Selma Ave, hotel project represents the first boutique hotel to come from these efforts. The hotel was approved by the Planning Commission by a vote of 5-0. The project envisions construction of a nine-story hotel incorporating the renovation and reuse of an existing warehouse building and improvements to an adjacent alley. The boutique hotel will include 120 guest rooms, bar/lounge, a banquet/ballroom facility, rooftop restaurant, pool and patio area, as well as a wedding garden. They will also be transforming the adjacent alley into a public gathering place with outdoor dining.

Fleishman-Hillard, located at the corner of Hollywood and McCadden Place, celebrated the opening of its new Hollywood office last week.  The nationally-renowned public relations firm recently moved its offices from Downtown L.A.  Their local personnel are excited to be here.  A brochure distributed at the ribbon-cutting ceremony stated:  As the first global public relations firm located in the heart of Hollywood, our new location provides the vibrant dynamic of an iconic heritage with a city being reborn new mixed-use construction is everywhere, including condos rising adjacent to our building and the new W Hotel right down the street.  This is where the historic and cutting edge combine, with an energy that engages all at our crossroads where entertainment, corporate, consumer and digital new media meet.  On behalf of the Chamber, we welcome Fleishman-Hillard to Hollywood. Metro Announces Funding to Install Gates in Subway

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who chairs the Metropolitan Transit Authority, announced last week that more than $16-million in Proposition 1B money has been received to improve transit security and boost safety measures at Metro stations.  The MTA is expected to use the funds to offset the cost of installing a gating system on the Metro Red Line and other rail stations.  Currently, the MTA operates a barrier-free honor system, leading to $5.5-million per year in losses due to fare evasion.  The new gating system could recover between $3 and $6-million dollars on an annual basis to offset losses and to save on the costs of fare inspectors.  In addition, law enforcement personnel deployed to each Metro stop would be able to direct their attention exclusively toward station security, rather than checking fare cards and inspecting passenger tickets.
