Chamber
Participates in Tour of Permanent Supportive
Housing

A delegation of Hollywood
business community leaders visited the City of
Santa Monica last week as part of an on-going
effort to find innovative approaches to combat
homelessness in Hollywood. The delegation
toured Santa Monica’s Step Up on Second
facility – a psycho-social rehabilitation
program serving individuals with mental illness.
The facility serves as permanent housing for 36
individuals and offers on site services to help
residents acquire and maintain independent
living at the facility and within the community.
The Step Up program is based on a “housing
first” approach to homelessness which recognizes
the effectiveness of permanent supportive
housing over the more historical approach of
asking the homeless to navigate their way
through a complex web of isolated housing,
feeding, and other service programs. The group
of Hollywood business community leaders meets
regularly to discuss alternatives for ending
homelessness in Hollywood. The group will also
be participating in the upcoming
Project YIMBY Homeless Connect Day this
Thursday, June 26 from 7 – 1 pm at the Music Box
Theater (see attached flyer for further
information). The Project YIMBY event, held
annually, will provide much needed services to
Hollywood’s homeless population. For information
on how to get involved the Hollywood Business
Roundtable on Homelessness please contact the
Chamber’s Vice President of Public Policy,
Nicole Shahenian at

Central Park Coalition
Holds Successful Community Meetings
Approximately
100 persons attended two community meetings held
over the last two weeks to provide final input
to our consultants from EDAW as they finalize
the feasibility study on the proposed Hollywood
Freeway Central Park. Don Scott, chair of the
coalition, expressed pleasure at the
overwhelmingly positive response from the
community. The consultants used the meeting to
explain how the proposed park area might be
developed in different stages as funding is
identified and to discuss possible uses within
the different areas. It was noted that as
planning proceeds, it will be based on the
decision that this is a park for the local
community and that local residents will help
guide its development. Consultants expect to
finalize the report this fall. Scott expressed
appreciation to Laurie Goldman of GO! Goldman
Organization for taking the lead in organizing
the two community meetings. Scott also reported
that the Central Hollywood Coalition has voted
to endorse the project, adding to the impressive
list of supporters. Contributions are still
being sought to help move the project forward.
Anyone interested should make their checks
payable to the: "Hollywood Freeway Central Park
Coalition” and mail to the Chamber at 7018
Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028.
