Chamber Hosts President-elect of African Union

Chamber officials met this week with Jean Ping, the president-elect of the African Commission Union, an association of 53 nations on the African continent.  Mr. Ping was on a trade mission to Los Angeles to explore opportunities for expanded trade between the United States and countries in Africa.  On hand to meet the diplomatic official were Chamber officers Bill Farrar of Andrews International Security, Steve Tronson of Ramsey-Shilling Commercial Real Estate and Chamber President Leron Gubler.  The meeting was arranged by Ms Gail Mkenzie of Contact Intl inc and King Nat of Talking Drum ‘The African Voice.’

Town Hall Planned on Parking, Planning and Transportation

A coalition of the six Hollywood neighborhood councils is sponsoring a Town Hall meeting this Thursday, March 13th, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1760 N. Gower Street.  The meeting is open to all residents and businesses in Hollywood.  Various public officials and city officials will be present to participate in the discussion, which will focus on the issues of parking, planning and transportation.  These are issues which the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce also finds important and is working to develop solutions.  Plan to attend and participate in the dialogue.

Walk of Fame Honors Bestowed on Schwartz and McMahon

Two legends are being honored with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Last Friday, Sherwood Schwartz, who has written and/or produced more than 700 television shows over the last 58 years received a star.  Schwartz developed such classics as The Red Skelton Show, My Favorite Martion, Gilligan’s Island, and The Brady Bunch.   On hand to help him celebrate were Florence Henderson, and Dawn Allen, who played Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island.  This Friday, at 11:30 a.m., Vince McMahon, will be honored in front of Hollywood & Highland.  McMahon, who is chair of World Wrestling Entertainment, has brought this electric form of sports entertainment to millions of fans across the globe.  He has been a fixture on television for more than 30 years.

Business & Tourism Expo Sets Records

The Hollywood Chamber’s 19th annual Business & Tourism Expo, held last week at the Universal Hilton, set records as the most successful expo the Chamber has ever produced.  More than 90 exhibitors participated, with several hundred in attendance.  Claiming the prize for the best booth was also the Universal Hilton.  Presenting sponsors for this year’s event were Konica-Minolta and the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles. Johnny Grant Remembered

Hollywood’s beloved honorary mayor, Johnny Grant, was remembered last week and his life celebrated at a special service at the Pantages Theatre attended by about 1,000 people. In addition to numerous celebrities, there were notable public officials in attendance as well as hundreds of friends.  About 20 members of Johnny’s extended family traveled from across the country to be present at the service. The Chamber expresses appreciation to everyone who helped to put the program together.  While there are too many to single out, we do appreciate the Pantages and Nederlander Company for their generosity and cooperation, to Dede Dadigan and the Hollywood History Museum for presenting a wonderful exhibit on Johnny’s life, and to Michael Teilman for organizing the program. Click to view a slideshow of Johnny Grant moments.
