Selma-Wilcox Office Building Moves Forward

Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler was on hand this week to testify before the City Planning Commission on behalf of the Chamber in support of an office-condo project being proposed by Brentwood Capital.  The company, which also owns the adjacent historic Hollywood Citizen News Building, is proposing a 72,576-sq.ft. building, with 210 parking spaces that would service both the new building and tenants in the Citizen News Building.  The project still must go to the Planning and Land Use Committee and to the City Council for approval.

19th Annual Hollywood Business & Tourism Expo!

Chamber Helps Cut “Ribbon” for Linoleum City

One of Hollywood’s oldest businesses, Linoleum City, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new facility at 4849 Santa Monica Blvd.  Founded in 1948, the company is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, according to Fred Stifter, president.  Housed for many years in a building adjacent to the Sears store on Santa Monica Blvd., the company moved over the Thanksgiving weekend in order to make way for a new retail center at that site.  Fred invites all Chamber members to drop by and see their brand new facility.

Memorial Service Planned to Celebrate the Life of Johnny Grant

A Celebration of Life event will be held in honor of the late, great Johnny Grant on Thursday, March 6, at 10 a.m. at the historic Pantages Theatre, one of Johnny’s favorite venues. Johnny once did the arrivals at the Pantages for the Oscar ceremonies and many other events. Many celebrities, politicians, military officers and close friends and family will be on hand to pay tribute to Hollywood’s greatest cheerleader. Please note that the event is open to the public but on a first come, first served basis.

East Hollywood BID Board Meets

Jeff Zarrinnam (center) visits with Michael Cortez and Mayra Rivera of the CRA.

The Board of the East Hollywood Business Improvement District met this week at their quarterly meeting to hear updates from the Hollywood Beautification Team about efforts to improve the appearance of the district and to discuss additional steps that might be taken.  The board is considering a program to paint all of the light poles a consistent color, and authorized the planting of 121 street trees to fill tree wells where trees are missing.  In additional action, they adopted a logo for the district, and began planning for a mixer later this year for the property owners to be held in conjunction with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

Foundation Plans its 15th Annual WOD Fundraiser

The Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation is already planning the 15th Annual Women of Distinction fundraiser which will be held at The Globe at Universal on May 8, 2008. Laurie Goldman of GO! Goldman Organization and Maureen Schultz of Capitol Records are back for their second year as co-chairs of this event. This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation, which raised more than $100,000 last year. Funds from WOD are distributed through the Community Foundation to Hollywood based nonprofit organizations. The WOD planning committee is seeking sponsors and silent auction items. Volunteers who are interested in serving on the event committee, or soliciting sponsorships and auction items can contact Kaylee Kiecker, kaylee@hollywoodchamber.net

Chamber V.P. Asks for Assistance for Fallen LAPD Officer

Chamber Vice President Bill Farrar has asked that we share the following message with our members:

“As I am sure most of you are aware, SWAT officers Randy Simmons and Jim Veenstra were shot last week during an attempt to rescue shooting victims of a domestic dispute.  Unfortunately for all of us, Randy lost his life while Jim lies in critical condition.  To put it straight forward, Randy was simply a good man, as is Jim.  Randy spent much of his off-duty time in volunteer church and community service.  Both officers are personal friends of our company executive management and collectively we have worked with both for over two decades.

Their families have much hardship to face while Jim has a lengthy recovery that will include several painful reconstructive surgeries to his face.  The Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation prepares for just such tragedies.  With the help of the City, the families and recovering officers are pretty well cared for.  However, there are still many expenses that are just not covered.  This type of event is devastating.

The LA Police Federal Credit Union has set up accounts to assist toward the effort of assistance for the families.  Contributions may be made at www.lapfcu.org.  Please consider joining many of us in directly giving something back for these selfless sacrifices.  Your care and assistance is most appreciated.”
