Garcetti Speaks
to Packed House

L.A. Council
President Eric Garcetti delivered his seventh
State of Hollywood address to the Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce this week before a packed
house at the Roosevelt Hotel. He cited a litany
of accomplishments in what he called a
“watershed year” – noting that an investment of
$700-million in public funds in Hollywood had
attracted more than $5.5-billion in private
sector investment. Garcetti said the most
beautiful sight in Hollywood today is the
construction cranes at Hollywood and Vine. He
noted the progress that has been made on the
proposed freeway cap park this year and
committed to make it a reality. He also
detailed some new initiatives he is pursuing –
including the so-called “12 to 2” program to
reduce the number of city agencies with which
developers must deal, and an effort to create
the first Entertainment Technology District in
Hollywood. He also announced a program, called
“At the Park, After Dark” that he hopes to bring
to Hollywood this year to provide safe evening
activities for local youth. He dedicated his
speech to the late Johnny Grant, who he said had
dreams for Hollywood, and got them done through
hard work. He challenged the audience to dream
big. “Our dreams must be big enough to honor
Hollywood’s history and to write the next
chapter,” he concluded. “Don’t just stand
there. Get in there.”

Attend Freeway Park
Community Outreach Meeting Tomorrow
Hollywood
businesses and residents are invited for a community-wide meeting focusing
on the proposed Hollywood Central Park, planned
above the Hollywood Freeway. The meeting will
be held tomorrow Saturday at Selma Elementary
School, 6611 Selma Ave. This will be a chance
for Hollywood stakeholders to express their
opinions on what they would like such a park to
be. The Hollywood Central Park Coalition that
the Chamber has organized will help facilitate
and sponsor the meeting, along with Councilmembers Garcetti and LaBonge, Mayor
Villaraigosa, and the CRA/LA. Also, kicking off
in January will be the feasibility study for the
park. The proposed park remains a top priority
of the Hollywood Chamber, which will be working
hard in 2008 to keep the project moving forward.
Read the flyer in
English or
Spanish.
Attendance is
highly encouraged and people
can just show up even if they have not reserved
and will be welcome.

Development Projects
Move Forward in Hollywood
The monthly
construction coordination meeting, held this
week at the Chamber revealed considerable
progress on major projects in Hollywood. The
Hollywood & Vine project is now in the seventh
month of construction and is ahead of schedule.
Construction crews are now at grade and expect
to finish the first level by the end of
February. The Clarett Group’s Boulevard 6200
project is expected to begin demolition within
the next 3 weeks on the north block of the
project just east of the Pantages Theatre. They
expect to begin actual construction in May or
June. Meanwhile, developers of the PaliHouse
are completing the second floor of that project
and hope to be pouring the third floor by the
end of the month. Camden’s Whole Foods Market
and apartments project, at the Corner of Selma
and Vine, is on track for a groundbreaking in
the third quarter of this year.
