Johnny Grant
Honored by City Council
Hollywood’s
honorary mayor, Johnny Grant, was honored this
week by the Los Angeles City Council on the
occasion of his 60th overseas
entertainment tour for the Armed Forces. Johnny
completed the trip two weeks ago, when he flew
to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to be the grand marshal
of their holiday parade on December 1st.
True to his past tradition, he took several film
and television celebrities as well as popular
Victoria’s Secret supermodels to brighten the
troops holidays. The visit benchmarked his 65th
year of service to the military. Johnny has made
more USO trips than any other celebrity in
history, including his friend Bob Hope. Paying
accolades to Grant before the City Council were
Council President Eric Garcetti, Councilman Tom
LaBonge and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

East Hollywood BID
Board Studies Area Issues

The Board of the
East Hollywood Business Improvement District met
this week to evaluate progress made in improving
the streetscape and cleanliness through services
provided by the Hollywood Beautification Team.
The HBT was awarded a cleaning contract by the
BID Board in September. Sharyn Romano of HBT
presented them with some additional options to
improve the area by adding up to another 121
trees as well as watering and fertilizing
existing trees along Vermont Ave., Sunset Blvd.
and Hollywood Blvd. A special subcommittee was
set up to review and report back on the
options. They were also briefed on a project by
the CRA to beautify the traffic island at
Vermont and Hollywood Blvd.

Holiday Mixer Spreads
Cheer With Foundation Grants
The
Hollywood Chamber’s annual holiday mixer this
week at the Music Box at the Fonda helped to
spread cheer in more ways than one. Members
were generous in donating unwrapped toys for the
L.A. Fire Department to distribute to the
needy. The LAFD was appreciative of the toys,
since their donations are down this year. In
addition, Chamber Chair Jeff Briggs presented
three $2,500 Chamber Foundation Grants to local
organizations. The Hollywood Police Activities
League, represented by Kerry Morrison, will use
their grant to fund the crime prevention program
to provide young people with positive
alternatives. Mark Supper of the Gay & Lesbian
Elder Housing noted their grant would partially
underwrite the development and implementation of
a supportive services program, while Friends of
RSVP, represented by Norma Foster, will use
their grant to purchase supplies for their
crafts program. As always, Thad Smith and the
personnel at the Music Box provided members with
a great holiday mixer.

Community Enjoys
Chamber-sponsored Movie
More
than 350 people, mostly from the Hollywood
community, turned out last Sunday for a free
screening of the holiday classic, A Christmas
Story, at the Egyptian Theatre. The event
was co-sponsored by the Hollywood Chamber
Community Foundation, Iron Mountain Film &
Storage and by American Cinematheque. The free
movie was billed as a gift to the community from
the Chamber. American Cinematheque officials
were pleased by the response, with nearly half
of the patrons having never previously visited
their theatre. The Chamber is also appreciative
to the Musician’s Institute for providing a
combo to play holiday music as the public
assembled for the movie.
