Kodak Theatre Seals 10-Year Deal with Cirque du Soleil

Chamber officials were on hand this week for the announcement by the CIM Group that the popular performing company Cirque du Soleil has signed a 10-year agreement to base one of its productions at the Kodak Theatre, beginning in 2010.  The company anticipates holding 368 performances in the theatre annually, and then going dark for a month during Oscar season when the Academy of Motion Pictures presents the Academy Awards at the theatre.  The new show, which will have a Hollywood-related theme, will represent an investment of $100-million and will feature a cast of 75.  “This is great news for Hollywood,” said Chamber President Leron Gubler.  “Having a show of this caliber based at the Kodak will give the theatre stability and will be a boon to surrounding businesses that benefit whenever there is a performance at the theatre.”

Planning Moves Forward for AMPAS Museum

Heather Cochran, the Museum Project Administrator for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) briefed the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee this week on the status of their proposed Hollywood museum.  The proposed location is two blocks surrounding their Pickford Center on Vine Street that would allow for an eight-acre campus.  AMPAS is in negotiations to acquire the final parcels needed for the complex.  The renowned French architecture firm Atelier Christian de Portzamparc was recently selected to design the complex from 150 candidates.  Previously announced was Gallagher & Associates as the exhibition design firm and E. Verner Johnson &  Associates as the master planners for the museum campus.    AMPAS hopes to complete entitlements in 2008.  Cochran said we should begin to see clearing of the site and excavation by 2009.  The 200,000-sq.ft. facility is expected to attract one million visitors annually.

Foundation Awards Grants to Community Organizations

The Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation has announced the awarding of two $2,500 grants to two local organizations.  The new Triangle Square gay and lesbian senior housing project will receive a grant to assist with setting up a computer lab on each floor of the facility.  Friends of RSVP will receive a grant to assist with their crafts programs.  Their 750 volunteers assist numerous other community-based organizations with mailings and other volunteer services.

The Munchkins Honored with Star in Walk of Fame

In a walk down the Yellow Brick Road and memory lane, the Hollywood Chamber honored the remaining seven “munchkins” from the Wizard of Oz with the 2,352nd star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week.  The nostalgic ceremony was held adjacent to the Chinese Theatre and attracted a large crowd of well-wishers and wide media coverage.  The movie premiered at the Chinese Theatre 68-years ago, and has become one of the most beloved movies in film history.  Originally, there were approximately 124 Munchkins in the movie.  Most of the remaining Munchkins are in their 80’s.

Members Enjoy Open House

The Hollywood Chamber hosted an open house for the Chamber membership this week at the Chamber offices.  It was an opportunity for many members to see for the first time where the chamber does its work and to meet with the staff.  New Chamber member Soul, a great new restaurant opening next spring at the corner of Hollywood and Sycamore, presented an incredible assortment of hors d’oeuvres.   The Chamber expresses special appreciation to Iron Mountain Film & Sound Archives for sponsoring the open house for the Chamber.

Mark your calendars for the Chamber’s annual holiday mixer and toy drive, to be held on Thursday, December 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Music Box @ the Fonda.  As is tradition, the Holiday Mixer not only offers attendees festive networking atmosphere, but also serves as the Chamber’s opportunity to collect holiday gifts for children in our community.  Attendees bringing a new unwrapped toy or appropriate child’s gift valued at a minimum of $10 will receive free admission.  RSVP to Vivian@hollywoodchamber.net or call (323)469-8311.

Chamber Offers Community Free Movie Screening

On Sunday, December 9th, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will offer a holiday gift to the Hollywood community – a free screening of the holiday  movie comedy A Christmas Story at the Egyptian Theatre, beginning at 2 p.m.  As a special treat, actor Zack Ward and several other cast members will be present to discuss the movie following the screening. The chamber is sponsoring the movie in cooperation with American Cinematheque. A grant from Iron Mountain Film & Storage also helped to make it possible.  Hollywood & Highland is also expected to tie-in that day with special events for the local residents.
