LaBonge Talks Culture, Transportation and Tourism

Fourth Council District Representative Tom LaBonge held his annual briefing with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce this week, and brought along three City experts to talk about culture, transportation and tourism - Michael Collins of L.A. Inc., Ogla Garay of the Cultural Affairs Dept., and Zaki Mustafa of the Dept. of Transportation. Garay told the Chamber that the City had secured a $1.9-million grant from the State to assist in the restoration of Hollyhock House in Barnsdall Art Park. Collins spoke about the importance of the Hollywood brand to the city, and reported that L.A. had the fourth highest room occupancy average of all cities in the U.S., only exceeded by Las Vegas, New York and Honolulu. Mustafa reported that seven permanent changeable message signs will be installed in the next several months at Hollywood gateways to advise the public of traffic conditions. LaBonge reported that the Highland and Franklin intersection was the busiest in the City and that the first phase of street improvements at that intersection was nearly complete.

Garcetti Aide Addresses Board on Development Reform

Kelli Bernard, the Director of Planning and Economic Development for L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti, addressed the Board of the Hollywood Chamber this week. Her topic was Garcetti’s proposal, known as “12-2”, to streamline the process required of developers to gain approval for their projects. Currently, all proposed projects must be reviewed by 12 City departments. Garcetti is proposing that the approval process be reduced to the City Planning Dept. for entitlements and the Building & Safety Dept. for permits, with a city facilitator acting as liaison to the other departments. He is currently meeting with the various department heads to secure their buy-in to the concept, after which a working group will be formed with representatives of all 12 departments to hammer out a firm proposal. Bernard promised to report back to the Chamber in January on the progress that is being made.  The Chamber Board has gone on record in support of the reforms.

Members Invited to Chamber Open House

With Thanksgiving around the corner the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an open house to express our “thanks” to Chamber members the evening of Tuesday, November 20th. Hundreds Fed at Annual Police/Fire Appreciation BBQ

Several hundred public safety officers for Hollywood were fed an incredible barbecue on Friday, that included tri-tip, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, tamales, salads, and desserts at the annual Police/Fire Appreciation BBQ that is organized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.  What started 14 years ago as a small barbecue on the roof of the police station for one shift of officers has grown into probably the largest community appreciation activity in the City for public safety officers. All three shift of LAPD’s Hollywood Division are fed as well as firefighters from all Hollywood stations. The event was coordinated this year by Chamber Vice President of Marketing Kaylee Kiecker. She expressed appreciation to the numerous organizations that helped to underwrite the event and to the many community volunteers who helped from early morning until after 8 p.m.  The major sponsor of the event was Andrews International Security, with others including Charcoal, Joel Fisher, the Avalon Nightclub, the Church of Scientology, First Presbyterian Church, the Roosevelt Hotel and Francesca Verdugo.

Legendary Munchkins to be Honored on Walk of Fame

“As, Coroner, I must aver,
I thoroughly examined her,
And she’s not only MERELY dead,
She’s really most SINCERELY dead.”

CORONER, played by Meinhardt Raabe

The Walk of Fame will bestow a star on the seven remaining original Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz on November 20th.  To celebrate this grand and glorious occasion, Hollywood Heritage and the Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation have joined together to present a special evening, in their honor, on Monday night, November 19th at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre, including a Munchkin Sponsors Reception and a screening of the restored technicolor print of the Wizard of Oz, the only print that exists in its original format!  Bring the family to this once in a lifetime opportunity. For event details, sponsorship information, and screening tickets, Reserve Here.

Holiday Decorations Going Up on Hollywood Blvd.

The annual holiday decorations on Hollywood Blvd. are in the process of being installed and should be in place in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Long organized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the decorations were expanded this year with a contribution from the Hollywood Entertainment District.  A total of 75 palm trees along the famous Boulevard will be wrapped with rope lights and another 22 star decorations will be installed near the intersections of Highland and Vine Street.  With the hit musical Wicked playing at the Pantages Theatre, and new retailers opening on the Boulevard, the decorations help to set the mood for the holiday season in the community.

Chamber Offers the Community a Holiday Gift

On Sunday, December 9th, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will offer a holiday gift to the Hollywood community – a free screening of the holiday  movie comedy A Christmas Story at the Egyptian Theatre, beginning at 2 p.m.  As a special treat, actor Zack Ward and several other cast members will be present to discuss the movie following the screening. The chamber is sponsoring the movie in cooperation with American Cinematheque. A grant from Iron Mountain Film & Storage also helped to make it possible.  Hollywood & Highland is also expected to tie-in that day with special events for the local residents.
