Chamber Endorses Garcetti’s
12 to 2 Plan
The
Hollywood Chamber Board of Directors voted this
week to go on record early as a supporter of
L.A. Council President Eric Garcetti’s proposed
“12 to 2” Plan. He is proposing to reduce from
12 to two the number of government agencies that
review any single development project. Chamber
Chair Jeff Briggs commended the councilman for
the initiative, which, if approved, will
streamline the approval process in the City,
widely regarded as cumbersome and time
consuming. Garcetti’s proposal would assign a
case planner to work with developers beginning
early in the process. The case worker would be
the liaison with all 12 departments.

JPI Project at
Highland and Yucca
Breaks Ground

Hollywood Chamber representatives were on hand Monday to
help JPI, one of the nation’s largest luxury apartment
companies, break ground on a mixed-use project at the corner
of Highland and Yucca. The 2.2-acre site will accommodate
270 apartments and eight live/work units. Twenty-seven of
the units will be reserved as affordable for moderate, low,
and very-low income households. The project will also
include 8,500-sq.ft. of retail space and a parking garage
with 285 spaces for public use in addition to those for the
residents. At the ceremony, JPI presented a check to
Covenant House for $20,000 to show their support of the
community. “We are thrilled to see construction start on
what will be a gateway project as people enter Hollywood,”
said Chamber President Leron Gubler.

City of Los
Angeles Announces New Hollywood Santa Parade
Plans for a
community parade to replace the
nationally-renowned Hollywood Christmas Parade
were announced this week by Council President
Eric Garcetti and Councilman Tom LaBonge and producers. To be known as the
Hollywood Santa Parade, the new parade will take
place the Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 25th. The
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
announced earlier this year that we were
discontinuing our long-time Hollywood Christmas
Parade tradition, after 75 years. Declining
television viewership in recent years made it
impossible for the Chamber to sustain a parade
of the quality necessary to garner national
distribution and to attract high-caliber
celebrities. The City of Los Angeles desired to
maintain a parade for the local community and is
working with some of our former volunteers to
produce the new parade. Many of our members have
been approached about contributing to the Santa
float for the new parade. While the Chamber is
not affiliated with this new parade, we do
encourage our members, if you are able, to help
support this new community program. For more
information please
contact Pageantry Productions at (310) 631-0691.

Sunset Gordon
Project Gains Key Approval
The Sunset
Gordon mixed-use project, proposed by
Gerding-Edlen, gained a key approval this week
with a unanimous vote of support from the
Community Redevelopment Agency Board. On hand
to testify for the project were Chamber Board
member George Abou-Daoud and Chamber President
Leron Gubler. The project will provide 311
housing units, with 60 reserved as workforce
units, 40,000-sq.ft. of creative office space,
13,500-sq.ft. of retail, 508 parking spaces and
a half-acre park. The developers will preserve
the building that housed the Spaghetti Factory,
which is considered historic. The project next
moves to the Planning Commission. Developers
hope to break ground next spring.

Ricky Martin Honored with
Star on Walk of Fame
The
Boulevard was living the “Vida Loca” on Tuesday
when approximately 2,000 screaming fans came to
watch Latin heartthrob Ricky Martin as he was
honored with the 2,351st star on the Hollywood
Walk of Fame in front of The Virgin Mega Store.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and actress Rita
Moreno were on-hand to give congratulations and
pay tribute to their friend. A very emotional
Martin stated, “I have talked to Congress and
the United Nations but have never been as
nervous as I am today. With this star my work
has been recognized and this star is here
forever!” Prior to the star unveiling and photo
opportunities, Walk of Fame Chairman Johnny
Grant proclaimed it "Ricky Martin Day in
Hollywood."

Halloween Event Takes a Hiatus
For hundreds of
Chamber members and their guests the Chamber’s
annual Halloween event, known as All Hallows Eve
and held at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, provides
a wildly unique outing, where attendees, dressed
in mourning attire, are wined and dined while
they stroll through the cemetery grounds.
Despite the popularity of the event, the Chamber
is unable to produce both it and the Chamber’s
Mission to China, which takes place from October
25th to November 2nd.
Boys and ghouls rejoice, there’s no need to
mourn the mourning event, it’s not dead, just
taking a year off.
