Cameras Installed at Sunset & Cahuenga to Catch Vehicles Running Red Lights

A press conference was held this week to announce the installation of cameras at the intersection of Sunset and Cahuenga Blvds.  The new monitoring system will record license plates of vehicles that run red lights.  The intersection is the seventh to receive the cameras citywide of what eventually will be a system monitoring 32 intersections.  The intersection was selected because of the high number of accidents that have occurred at that location, according to LA Council President Eric Garcetti.  Chamber President Leron Gubler noted that besides reducing the number of accidents, the cameras should also help relieve congestion caused by cars blocking the intersection after the light has turned red.  For the next 30 days, the City will issue only warnings to violators, but thereafter violators will be faced with fines of $381.

Hotel Committee Reviews Progress on New Hollywood Hotels

The Chamber’s Hotel Task Force, chaired by Dave Gajda, met this week to review progress at encouraging new boutique hotels to locate in Hollywood.  Developer Richard Heyman briefed the committee on his firm’s plans to convert an existing two-story parking garage on Selma Avenue near Cahuenga into a 100-room hotel.  Plans being studied would preserve the 150 parking spaces in the garage and build the hotel rooms above the garage with a rooftop restaurant.  Several others in attendance at the meeting also reported on other projects in the development pipeline that would add hotel rooms to the Hollywood market.

Tourism Committee Briefed on Efforts to Resolve Problems with Vendors and Characters

The Tourism Committee was briefed this week by Kerry Morrison of the Hollywood Entertainment District (HED) on efforts to curtail unlawful activities by street vendors and the characters in front of the Chinese Theater and Hollywood & Highland complex.  Committee members voiced concerns about tourists being accosted by aggressive characters and cd vendors seeking money.   Bill Farrar of Andrews International Security reported that his firm has already clamped down on illegal food vendors.  However, there are first amendment issues that need to be resolved before action can be taken against some of the other problem cases.  The HED is currently researching the issue.  The Chamber pledged to assist and also enlist the support of our elected State representatives if needed.  Also, at the meeting, it was reported that the Chamber is working with Council President Garcetti’s office to identify new tour bus layover areas.  Construction is expected to begin in the next month on Madame Tussauds and on JPI’s Highland and Yucca project.  Each of the projects will result in the loss of current bus layover areas.

Jillian’s Hi-Life Lanes, located at Universal City Walk, is bringing “party central” to the Chamber’s August mixer with what Newsweek Magazine calls a  “…part hip scene, part old-fashioned fun, high class…” venue.  Jillian’s revolutionized bowling by positioning itself for adults and corporate clientele and brings the American tradition of the bowling alley to a whole new level.

The mixer will be held upstairs in the Private Party Lounge on Thursday August 30th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Cost to attend is $10 for members ($20 for non-members), which includes tastes of Jillian’s delicious hors d’oeuvres, two beverages, and an opportunity to play at Party Central!

“Whether you bring a party or just have one, great things happen at Jillian’s,” said Kristi Schaffter of Jillian’s.  For more information on what the Boston Globe calls “…the Superbowl of game rooms…” please go to www.jilliansbilliards.com, or call Kristi at (818) 985-9213. Jillian’s is located in Universal Citywalk, 1000 Universal City Drive, at the south-end.

Citywalk parking costs are $10 for self-park (good all day/night), or valet is $7.50 for the first two hours and $2.50 for each additional half hour (with validation).  Show your self-park receipt at registration and receive a complimentary $5 “Jillian’s Player Card” to enjoy one of Jillian’s virtual game experiences after the mixer.  The closest self-park structure to Jillian’s is Curious George, and the closest valet structure is Jurassic. Please RSVP to vivian@hollywoodchamber.net, call (323) 469-8311, or visit www.HollywoodChamber.net

The Chamber achieved its goal of registering 145 members and their guests to depart on October 25th for an experience of a lifetime, exploring the history and culture of China at an unbeatable price.  Due to last-minute interest in joining the Chamber’s delegation, we have expanded the delegation to accommodate up to 170.  Participants will enjoy 5-star and 4-star accommodations, all meals, airfare, in-country travel and personal guided tours in English to such sites as the Great Wall of China, and Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City.  Other locales visited will be Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou.  The trip includes a reception where personal introductions are made between Hollywood delegates and Chinese business professionals.  Visit www.Hollywoodchamber.net for a brochure and registration form today!  Applications will be accepted until August 15th.
