Chamber
Hosts Leadership L.A. Class Case Study
The Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce hosted the Leadership L.A.
class of 2007 this week, as they did a case
study of the revitalization of Hollywood.
Leadership L.A. is a program to train future
leaders on the issues facing the Los Angeles
metropolitan area. The 25 attendees received an
in-depth look at the Hollywood experience, the
factors that led to the decline of the community
and how it has fought its way back to become a
success story. Chamber members who participated
in the program included: Laurie Goldman of GO!
Goldman Organization, Jeff Briggs of Briggs Law,
David Gajda of AccessIT, Drew Colquitt of
Alliance Residential, Robert Nudelman of
Hollywood Heritage, and Leron Gubler. Former
L.A. City Councilman Michael Woo moderated the panel.

Walk of Fame Star Removal
Creates Media Interest
A story in the
Los Angeles Times this week caused a media
sensation about the removal of 70 stars for the
construction of the Hollywood & Vine complex. The stars had actually been removed about three
months ago, but their absence had gone unnoticed
by the press until the Times story. Normally,
it is the Chamber’s preference that stars be
preserved “in-place” during the construction of
major projects with scaffolding built over and
above to allow pedestrian access. In the case
of the Hollywood & Vine project, construction
was going to the curb, making it impossible to
leave the stars in-place. The stars have been
placed in protective storage until they can be
replaced as part of a rebuilt sidewalk at the
conclusion of construction in 2009. The Chamber
regrets the removal of the stars but notes that
the new development will be a major improvement
for the area and will allow the stars to be
showcased in a newly-revamped walk. Click
here for
a list
of the stars that have been temporarily
removed.

Chamber Meets with Visual
Effects Industry
Left
to right: Leron Gubler, Tony Smoller of Pixel
Liberation Front, Bill Allen of LAEDC, and Adrin
Nazarian representing Assemblyman Paul Krikorian.
The Hollywood
Chamber co-hosted a meeting with the Los Angeles
Economic Development Corporation this week to
discuss the needs of Hollywood’s visual effects
industry. Stiff competition from other states
and nations is siphoning off business that
formerly went to the local industry. Attendees
noted that the number of movies produced per
year is around 400 and not growing, and so every
movie shot and edited out of California takes
business away from the local industry. The need
for State incentives to retain business in the
state was discussed and the problems that have
been encountered in getting the legislature to
act. Among the items that will be researched
further is if it might be possible to quantify
the tax revenue that is being lost to the State
as movies are filmed elsewhere. Attendees felt
the meeting was a good first step. The Chamber
will be sponsoring a luncheon on September 26th
to discuss the reasons why the State has not
enacted legislation to fight runaway
production. Mark you calendars! More
information will be provided shortly.
