Hollywood Chamber
Assists With LAFD Evacuation Exercise

The
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce participated in
last Saturday’s evacuation exercise by the Los
Angeles Fire Department. This was the first
test by the LAFD with residents of the Oaks
neighborhood to test city resources in the event
that an emergency, such as the recent fires,
necessitated a total evacuation of a hillside
neighborhood. The Chamber hosted a table at
Cheremoya Elementary School, the designated
evacuation site, with information about the
proposed Hollywood Freeway Cap Park. Chamber
Board members Don Scott and Laurie Goldman, as
well as Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler
staffed the table.

bowling by positioning itself for adults and

tradition of the bowling alley to a whole new
level.

State Agency to
Hold Hearings on Meal and Rest Periods
The California
Dept. of Industrial Relations will be holding a
hearing on Thursday, August 9, at Cal State
Northridge, in the Northridge State Alumni
Center, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on recent changes
to meal and rest period enforcement practices,
which impact all businesses. A recent court
case ruled that the amount paid to a worker by
an employer for failing to provide a worker
a meal
break is a wage, not a penalty. The court’s
decision increases an employer’s liability by
establishing a three-year statute of limitation
for employees to sue about an alleged
violation.
Employers must
treat the payment owed for a missed meal period
as a wage and pay the employee the statutory
amount. If you are unable to attend the hearing
and wish to submit written comments, they may be
mailed to: Chief Counsel, Div. of Labor
Standards Enforcement, P.O. Box 420603, San
Francisco, CA 94142, by August 31st.
Further information may be obtained by
contacting:
cathy.mesch@calchamber.com.
