Sunrise on Sunset Summit Sets Records

The 2007
Hollywood Economic Development Summit, held this
past Thursday at the Arclight Cinemas, is one
for the record books. The popular event sold
out for the second year in a row, with a crowd
in excess of 400 people, the most people ever to
attend the summit. Council President Eric
Garcetti, commented on the attendance. “One day
we will be in the CineramaDome. The attendance
reflects a strength of place, of people and a
moment in history,” he said. This year’s event
focused on the more than $2-billion in
investment pouring into the Sunset Blvd.
corridor. A panel of developers addressed
specific projects, while major addresses were
delivered by L.A. City Planner Gail Goldberg and
CRA CEO Cecilia Estolano. A special
Sunset-themed video was prepared by a committee
headed by Laurie Goldman, Dave Gajda and Tony
Michelman. The event was co-chaired by Brent
Folb of Paramount Contracting and Ira Dankberg
of Bond Companies. A coveted update of all the
major development projects was also
distributed. Chamber members who missed the
summit but who would like a copy of the update
can secure it at the Chamber office.

Board Urges City
to Pursue Program to allow Hailing of Taxi
The
Board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce voted
this week to urge the City Department of
Transportation to investigate how to make it
possible for people in Hollywood to hail a taxi,
as is allowed in most major metropolitan cities
across the country. Although it is not
technically illegal in Los Angeles to hail a
taxi, it does not work practically because of
major fines the City levies against taxis that
impede traffic and park illegally to pick up
patrons. The Chamber board felt it would
improve traffic flow in Hollywood if people were
allowed to hail taxis rather than drive their
own cars in order to reach appointments.
Whether allowing taxis to park in red zones or
creating frequent locations where hailing taxis
would be allowed, the Chamber felt that all
options should be considered.

Elizabeth McDonald and Rochelle Silsbee

On a sadder
note, the Chamber Board said farewell to two
employees who have accepted other
positions. Rochelle Silsbee is leaving the
Chamber to work for the City of L.A. in the
Mayor’s office as the representative for
Hollywood-Wilshire-Koreatown. Elizabeth
McDonald has been hired by the Hollywood
Roosevelt Hotel as their Director of
Conference Services. “While we hate to lose
two outstanding employees, it is a tribute
to the Chamber that they were in demand by
the Mayor’s office and Roosevelt Hotel. We
wish them the very best,” said Chamber
President and CEO Leron Gubler. |

Tourism Committee Reviews
Starline Tours Circulator
The Chamber’s
Tourism Committee heard a presentation this week
from Starline Tours, which is launching a new
service with double decker buses that will run a
fixed route daily between the hours of 9 a.m.
and 7 p.m. at 30-minute intervals between
Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the Farmers
Market. Tourists will pay one price and have
the right to ride the shuttles for 24 hours at
no additional cost. The tour company is
seeking signage at the various stops along the
route to identify the stops and asked for
Chamber support. The committee voted to
recommend to the Board of Directors that the
Chamber urge the City to cooperate in placing
the needed signs along the route.
