Foundation Awards
Grants
The
Board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
Community Foundation met this week and awarded
three new $2,500 grants to community
organizations. They approved a grant to the
LAPD to assist with presentation of National
Night Out, a community outreach effort to be
held in August to rally area residents on the
need to fight crime. Also approved was a grant
to People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) for
emergency services to assist the homeless.
Finally, they approved a grant to the Social
Services at Blessed Sacrament Church to assist
500 homeless persons and needy families with
food, hygiene materials and clothing items.
Laurie Goldman announced that the Foundation
would net more than $60,000 on the recent Women
of Distinction luncheon, the most ever, which
will continue to allow the Foundation to help
needy Hollywood organizations. A grant
application is available on the Chamber’s
website,

Starline Tours
Announces Hollywood Circulator
Chamber
staff Elizabeth McDonald, VP of Tourism, and
Rochelle Silsbee, VP of Public Policy met down
with Starline Tours this week to discuss the
tour company’s latest venture. The
Citysightseeing bus plans kick off on June 16th
a circulator every half hour which takes people
from Grauman’s to Beverly Center, to the Farmers
Market and to Hollywood Forever Cemetery with
several other stops in between. Passengers will
be able to purchase a ticket valid for 24 hours
and the buses will have running ‘tour’
commentary as the folks ride from place to
place. What Starline needs is cooperation from
the city(ies) to erect signage for the
circulator stops to make things much simpler for
their customers. “One of our ‘issues’ in
Hollywood is finding a way to have people stay
more than the 20 minutes allowed at Grauman’s
through the bus tours. This tour circulator
allows people to create their own itineraries.”
said McDonald, “This allows people to
‘personalize their vacation, something that has
become an imperative in the Travel industry.”

Garcetti Speaks
Out on Planning Issues
This week, in a column printed in the Los
Angeles Business Journal, Los Angeles City
Council President Eric Garcetti offered his
insights on the Planning Department’s Do Real
Planning manifesto that was released last
month. The 14 letters in Planning Dept. head
Gail Goldberg’s familiar mantra, each pointed to
an important step in guiding Los Angeles towards
a 21st century urban design and
layout. Garcetti used his commentary to point
out how Hollywood is leading the way in the
transformation of the city to a new urban
tradition. Garcetti has also invited readers to
read about the 14 points looking
through the lens of his work within the district
on his blog at cd13.com. The Hollywood Chamber
of Commerce has been a strong proponent of the
vision to create a new, urban Hollywood with a
high quality of life. In case you missed the
councilman’s commentary in the Business
Journal, we
reprint it here for you

Walk of Fame
Committee Meets and Reviews Applications
The Walk of Fame Committee, chaired by Honorary
Mayor Johnny Grant, met this week to begin
deliberations in selecting honorees for
Hollywood’s famous walk. Each year, the Chamber
committee accepts nominations through the end of
May to be considered for Hollywood’s iconic
honor. Approximately 200 applications are
reviewed each year. Once the committee makes
its selections, they will be presented to the
Chamber Board of Directors for approval. The
announcement, expected later this month of the
new recipients, will garner worldwide publicity
for Hollywood.
New Landmark
Neon
Sign Graces Hollywood’s Skyline
As the sun was
setting
this past Tuesday evening,
The Patrón Spirits Company held a sign lighting
ceremony to illuminate the new neon billboard
sign on the roof of the former Equitable
Building, now known as
The Lofts @ Hollywood and Vine.
The message on the sign, and its highly visible
location, was selected by The Patrón Spirits
Company specifically to help support the
revitalization of Hollywood.
Ed Brown, president and
CEO of The Patrón
Spirits Company, initiated the countdown and
Rock Legend Gene Simmons flipped the
switch illuminating the night sky. The
sign’s message was created specifically for the neighborhood,
an extension of Patrón’s “Simply Perfect” global
advertising campaign, which examines and debates
topics of “perfection.” In this case, the
question is who is more “perfect” in Hollywood,
a “Rock Star” or a “Movie Star.” The billboard
alternately flashes this choice, over the words
“Some Perfection is Debatable,” then shifts to
an image of a Patrón tequila bottle, with the
words “Some is Not.”
“We haven’t forgotten the role that this
community has played in our success, and we’re
proud to bring Patrón to Hollywood once again,
with support and investment on this historic
revitalized corner of Hollywood and Vine, and on
this beautifully redesigned new residential
building,” said Brown.
