East Hollywood
Business Improvement District
On Wednesday, May 9,
property owners within the East Hollywood
Property Business Improvement District met for
the first time to discuss the BID’s governance
and organization, review the proposed bylaws and
begin the process of electing a Board of
Governors. A follow-up meeting will occur in
approximately one month, at which time an
election will determine the Board’s members and
officers. The Hollywood Chamber will serve as
the non-profit entity contracted with the City
of Los Angeles to manage the BID. Having a
modest budget compared to Hollywood’s other
existing BID’s, the Chamber will provide
dedicated staff, offices and insurance coverage,
thereby cutting operating expenses and allowing
the BID to focus more resources on its main
goals. These include the positive image
enhancement of the District through physical
improvements and landscaping, graffiti and
litter removal, as well as regular sidewalk
cleanings.
“Blue Shirts” Get New
Home
On May 10th,
2007 Andrews International, who operates the
Hollywood BID Patrol (affectionately known as
“Blue Shirts” to locals), opened the doors of
its new headquarters at Hollywood & Highland to
the community. A key partner in crime prevention
and reduction, the BID Patrol is a major
resource in the Hollywood Entertainment
District. The facility will be a shared
workspace by both the BID Patrol and the Los
Angeles Police Department in what is a rare but
effective partnership. “It is a testament to the
Hollywood community that private industry and
public service can work so well together,” said
Bill Farrar, vice president of operations and
business development for Andrews International.
So far in 2007 the Bid Patrol has made 556
arrests, but according to Farrar the BID Patrol
is working hard to solve problems rather than
just make the arrests. Clothing drives have
been organized to benefit P.A.T.H. (People
Assisting The Homeless) and a local church, with
more community outreach to come. This unique
partnership was made possible through the
diligent efforts of several people, including
Capt. LAPD Captain Clay Farrell, Dan Chismire,
Monica Yamada and Cindy Chong of the CIM Group
who have been huge supporters of the BID patrol
and the opening of its new facility. To contact
Andrews International for more information,
please call (661) 775-8400.

A Birthday
Bash of Legends
Hollywood’s Honorary Mayor
Johnny Grant turned eighty-four years old on
Wednesday, May 9, and celebrated in style with
friends and family in the Roosevelt Hotel’s
Oscar Room. Guests, including such screen
legends as Mickey Rooney, Mamie Van Doren, Terry
Moore and Rhonda Fleming, as well as
television’s Angie Dickenson and astronaut Buzz
Aldrin, arrived early for a cocktail reception
and were later treated to a “surf and turf”
lunch with a program that brought a few of
Johnny’s colleagues on stage to share stories of
experiences with Grant. LAPD Chief Bill Bratton
spoke of being a young soldier watching Johnny
entertain troops with Bob Hope in Vietnam.
Other speakers included Councilman Tom LaBonge,
Michael Teilman from the Bob Hope USO at LAX and
special birthday phone calls from Michael
Reagan, Stephanie Powers, and Craig Basel, the
Honorary Mayor of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where
Grant recently traveled to entertain troops.
Younger attendees were riveted by first-hand
stories of Hollywood’s Golden Age, told by those
who shaped Hollywood’s history.

Engineers, Architects
and Planners are Excited about being a part of
Hollywood Freeway Central Park

On Tuesday morning, the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce hosted a
capacity-crowd pre-bidders conference for a
study that will look at the feasibility of
constructing Hollywood Freeway Central Park atop
the 101 Freeway in a park-poor section of
Hollywood. Prospective bidders from some of the
top engineering and design firms across the
United States came to ask questions and listen
to comments by the Community Redevelopment
Agency and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce,
who are working in concert to make the park
project a reality. For a project that will
providing upwards of 24 acres of new park space
in Hollywood, engineers, planners, and landscape
architects are buzzing about the golden
opportunity to make the most famous city in the
world a better place to live, work and play.
