Hollywood-Garfield Project Passes Hurdle

A contingent of Hollywood Chamber of Commerce representatives stayed until 10 p.m. this past Tuesday to testify before the Central Area Planning Commission in support of the Bond Company’s Hollywood-Garfield project.  Chamber V.P. of Public Policy Rochelle Silsbee, Brian Folb of Paramount Contracting, Marty Shelton of NAI Capital, Don Scott of First Financial Bancorp, and Steve Tronson of Ramsey-Shilling Commercial Real Estate all testified in favor of the proposed development.  The project is expected to help advance the revitalization efforts in East Hollywood and includes 90 condominiums and 6,000-sq.ft. of retail space.  The commission voted in favor of the project.

Chamber Feeds Police and Firefighters

For the 12th year in a row, the Hollywood Chamber organized a barbecue this week in honor of Hollywood’s public safety officers and fed several hundred over the course of Friday.  Organizing the event was Elizabeth McDonald, the Chamber’s V.P. of Special Events & Tourism.  She expressed appreciation to the many people who donated time, money or products to make the day a success.  Those donating food included:  Bristol Farms, Avalon Nightclub, Huntington Meats, Hansens Drinks, The Music Box, DuPar’s, Hooters, Fabiolus Café, Boardners, Francesca Verdugo and Bennett’s Ice Cream.  Other contributions were received from: the Church of Scientology, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Paramount Pictures, Hollywood Tow Service, Alliance Residential, Wells Fargo Bank, Nancy Sinatra, and ELS Inc.

Proposed East Hollywood Business Improvement District Ballots Mailed

Ballots were received this week by property owners along the Vermont Ave. corridor to determine whether a business improvement district will be formed in that area.  Owners have up to 45 days to return the ballots, after which they will be counted and the Los Angeles City Council will validate the election.  Should the owners vote in favor, it will cap a six-year effort by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to form a district for that area.  The Hollywood Chamber Board voted this week to be the contracting agent with the City, for the district, which would enable the Chamber to oversee and help to get the start-up organization under way.  Leron Gubler, Chamber President & CEO, urged anyone who receives a ballot to sign and return it quickly.  “This is the best effort in a generation to do something that will benefit East Hollywood.  We hope the stakeholders in that area will recognize and support this opportunity.”

Speedy Networking Opportunity

Provided Chamber Members

On Thursday evening, Hollywood Billiards played host to the Chamber’s consummate networking event – Speed Leads.  Attendees had an opportunity, at 5-minute intervals to meet with everyone who was in attendance.  It was a great occasion to gain new contacts.  The Chamber expresses appreciation to Hollywood Billiards for hosting the event.

Chamber Urges City to Select CIM to Operate Hollywood & Highland Parking Garage

The Hollywood Chamber wrote a letter to the Department of Transportation this week expressing dismay that the CIM Group’s bid was not selected to operate the Hollywood & Highland parking garage. The Chamber noted that CIM is the owner of the center and has a vested interest in seeing that the garage is operated properly and at an optimal level.  The letter pointed out that there are important considerations other than the lowest bid that should be considered, and said that the entity that can provide the highest level of service and which is familiar with the local area should carry weight in the selection process.  If you would like to voice your support for CIM, please email Gloria Jeff, General Manager of the Department of Transportation, at: gloria.jeff@lacity.org.

View a copy of the Chamber’s letter.

Contributions Continue to Collect

for Hollywood Central Park

Pledges are continuing to be made toward funding efforts to move forward with a Hollywood Central Park that would be built above the Hollywood Freeway where it runs below grade through Hollywood.  This week, Councilman Tom LaBonge pledged $5,000 toward the project and the Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation approved another $2,500.  Supporters hope to hire an engineering firm to perform a feasibility study early next year.  If you would like to pledge to the park effort, contact Chamber V.P. of Public Policy Rochelle Silsbee at (323)469-8311.
