Voters in Sync
with Hollywood Chamber
California
voters understood the issues at stake in
Tuesday’s election and voted to maintain a
healthy economy. The Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce was pleased that voters agreed with its
recommendations. The Chamber supported the
infrastructure measures 1A through 1E as well as
Proposition 84, and opposed propositions 86
through 90 as special interest measures that
would harm the economy and the business
community. At the local level, voters approved
Chamber-endorsed Measure R that extends City
Council terms to a maximum of 12 years, but
failed to reach the two-thirds vote necessary to
pass Measure H, a $1-billion housing bond. “We
are very pleased with the results of the
election,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron
Gubler. “The infrastructure measures will be
good for California and the economy, and we were
able to head off some very bad proposals.
Although Measure H did not pass, the election
did show a strong plurality in favor of
investing in workforce housing. Certainly there
will be a chance to try again in the future.”

Chamber Honors
Hollywood Entertainment District
Jeff
Briggs, Kerry Morrison, John Tronson, Russ
Joyner, David Green, and Steve Ullman.
Chamber Chair
Jeff Briggs presented a plaque to the Hollywood
Entertainment District (HED) this week, honoring
the business group for being a “Hollywood Star
for 10 years.” Briggs pointed out the great
success story of the BID, which reduced crime by
over 40 percent in its first year, cleaned up
the sidewalks and alleys, installed state-of-the
art surveillance cameras, and successfully
marketed the area as an up-and-coming nightclub
district. HED Executive Director Kerry
Morrison, and four of the five presidents of the
organization were on hand, including Steve
Ullman, David Green, Russ Joyner and John
Tronson. Chamber President Leron Gubler pointed
out that the HED’s efforts along Hollywood Blvd.
have freed up the Chamber to concentrate on
other important business issues and that the
Chamber and HED have always worked very closely
together to improve Hollywood.

LaBonge
Updates Chamber
on Key Community
Issues
Tom
LaBonge addressed questions to his panel,
including: Karen Constine of Cultural Affairs,
John Fisher of Dept. of Transportation, and
Michael McDowell of L.A. INC.
Councilman Tom
LaBonge of the Fourth Council District updated
the Chamber this week on local issues. He
reported on his efforts to reroute the Los
Angeles Marathon in 2007, so that it would pass
through the community quickly rather than follow
a winding route that would have created
gridlock. He also noted his efforts to do quick
fix projects on the Hollywood Freeway to
eliminate bottlenecks. He had John Fisher of
the Dept. of Transportation explain upcoming
projects to improve safety, including the
installation of traffic signals at Highland and
Lexington by the end of the year, and at Odin
and Cahuenga before next year’s Hollywood Bowl
season.
