Team Hollywood
Pitches to Retailers

The Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce was well represented this
week at the Dealmaking Conference of the
International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC)
in Palm Springs. The important trade
association meeting brings together the
representatives of national and regional
retailers from across the nation with
developers, cities and other parties interested
in bringing new retail to their projects and
communities. Pitching Hollywood were: Don
Scott, of First Financial Bancorp., Marty
Shelton of NAI Capital, Steve Tronson of
Ramsey-Shilling, and Chamber President Leron
Gubler. Among the 400 exhibitors at the
conference, the Hollywood Chamber was the only
chamber of commerce represented. The attendees
reported a great deal of interest in Hollywood.

BIDs Move Forward After Six Years
Good news was
received on two fronts this week in connection
with new business improvement districts for
Hollywood. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles City
Council voted to approve and certified the
election for the proposed Sunset & Vine Business
Improvement District. Chamber President Leron
Gubler was on hand to lend the Chamber’s voice
of support before the City Council. The new BID
will stretch on Sunset from the 101 Freeway to
roughly Las Palmas Ave. and on Vine between
Selma and Santa Monica Blvd. Also on Tuesday,
word was received that the City Attorney’s
office had finally signed off on a proposed East
Hollywood BID, that will allow an election to be
held and formation to be completed. The BID had
been delayed for two years due to a tug-of-war
between City agencies and the consultant over
wording in the proposed management plan. “These
developments are long-awaited and gratifying to
us,” said Gubler. “We know from the success of
our other BIDs that we can expect many positive
improvements along many of our most important
boulevards with the actions approved this week.”

Chamber Endorses CCA’s Proposed Industrial
Policy
The Board of
Directors of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
has voted to endorse a proposed Industrial Lands
Strategy being put forth by the Central City
Association. M-zoned land in the City of L.A.
comprises only 8 percent of the total land area
in the City but accounts for 17 percent of the
City’s tax revenue base. The intent of the
policy is to protect L.A.’s existing
manufacturing base, to site new manufacturing in
areas most appropriate to industrial uses, to
avoid spot zoning, and better utilize industrial
areas and CM and C-zoned commercial corridors.
The policy urges the City to establish three
separate industrial development districts: (1) a
pure industrial district, (2) a mixed-use
industrial district, and (3) a mixed-use
commercial corridor. Marty Shelton of NAI
Capital represented the Chamber in reviewing the
policy. Kate Bartolo of the KOR Group, chaired
the CCA committee that drew up the proposed
policy.
