Hollywood Chamber to honor Tavis Smiley with star on the Walk of Fame.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that television personality Tavis Smiley will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, April 24, 2014 near the famous corner of Hollywood & Vine.

“Tavis Smiley is an inspiration to our generation and future leaders. He continues to deliver entertainment, advocacy and politics with his honest conversations,” said Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “His fans will be glad to see Tavis join our Walk of Fame family.”

Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and guest speakers Larry King and Jay Leno will be on hand to unveil the star for Smiley, the 2,522nd star in the category of Television at 6270 Hollywood Boulevard. The star ceremony will be streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

Smiley was born in Gulfport, Mississippi. His family later moved to Indiana and he went on to attend Indiana University. Subsequently, he moved to Los Angeles to serve under Mayor Tom Bradley before venturing into broadcast media.

From his celebrated conversations with world figures to his work to inspire the next generation of leaders, Smiley — broadcaster, author, publisher, advocate, entrepreneur and philanthropist — has emerged as an outstanding voice for change. He is currently the host of the late-night television talk show Tavis Smiley on PBS, as well as The Tavis Smiley Show from Public Radio International (PRI).

In addition to his radio and television work, Smiley has written 16 books. His memoir, What I Know for Sure: My Story of Growing Up in America, became a New York Times best seller, and the book he edited, Covenant with Black America, became the first non-fiction book by a Black-owned publisher to reach No. 1 on The New York Times best-sellers list. He also co-wrote the New York Times best seller, The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto. His forthcoming book, to be published in September 2014, is Death of a King: The Real Story of the Last Year in the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Smiley was the presenter and creative force behind AMERICA I AM: The African American Imprint. This unprecedented traveling museum exhibition, which debuted in January 2009, toured the United States for four years, celebrating the extraordinary impact of African American contributions to the U.S. and the world, as delivered through rare artifacts, memorabilia and multimedia. Many of the artifacts Smiley discovered and displayed during the AMERICA I AM tour are now on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution.

Smiley’s most gratifying accomplishments are rooted in his commitment to champion human rights and empowerment issues, and in his passion to inspire the next generation of leaders. Since its inception, the Tavis Smiley Foundation has provided leadership training and development for more than 6,500 young people through ‘Youth to Leaders’ training workshops and conferences. Expanding upon Smiley’s pervious anti-poverty work, the Foundation recently launched Ending Poverty: America’s Silent Spaces, a four-year national initiative to examine barriers and identify solutions to reduce hardship among our most vulnerable citizens. As part of the initiative, Smiley will embark on a series of town halls across the country, beginning June 26th in Los Angeles.

Smiley is CEO of The Smiley Group, Inc., which serves as the holding company for various enterprises encompassing broadcast and print media, lectures, symposiums, book publishing, and digital platforms.

His achievements have earned him numerous awards and honorary doctorate degrees, including one from his alma mater, Indiana University. In 2009, Indiana University named the atrium of its School of Public and Environmental Affairs building “The Tavis Smiley Atrium.” Smiley is also the recipient of the prestigious Du Bois Medal from Harvard University, and the 2009 Interdependence Day Prize from Demos in Istanbul, Turkey. TIME magazine has named Smiley one of “The World’s 100 Most Influential People.”

Hollywood Chamber to honor Orlando Bloom with star on the Walk of Fame.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that Orlando Bloom will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 6927 Hollywood Boulevard next to the TCL Chinese Theatre and Madame Tussauds Hollywood. “We are thrilled to be honoring one of the most popular actors of our time,” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremonies. “His fans from around the world are going to be very excited about this ceremony!” she added.

Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and guest speaker Forest Whitaker and David Leveaux will be on hand to unveil the star for Orlando Bloom unveil the 2,521st star in the category of Motion Pictures at 6927 Hollywood Boulevard. The star ceremony will be streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

Orlando Bloom was born in Canterbury, England and trained at the National Youth Theatre in London. He earned a scholarship to study with the British American Drama Academy. Having completed his scholarship, Bloom made his feature film debut in “Wilde,” starring Stephen Fry and Jude Law.

Bloom was accepted to London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he performed in many stage productions. Upon graduation, a then unknown Bloom was cast in the films that launched his career: Peter Jackson’s Academy Award winning trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings.” Bloom captured the attention of international audiences and filmmakers alike as ‘Legolas.’

In the summer of 2003, Bloom starred opposite Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Disney hit, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” directed by Gore Verbinski.

Orlando then worked with Ridley Scott on “Black Hawk Down” and went on to star in Scott’s “Kingdom of Heaven” for 20th Century Fox. Bloom followed the epic Crusades’ film with his first contemporary American role starring opposite Kirsten Dunst in Cameron Crowe’s autobiographical “Elizabethtown,” directed by Crowe and produced by Tom Cruise for Paramount Pictures.

Bloom then reprised his role as ‘Will Turner’ in the box office record-breaking “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

In the wake of those blockbusters, Bloom made his debut on London’s West End in a revival of David Storey’s 1969 drama, “In Celebration.” Produced by Sonia Friedman and directed by Anna Mackmin, the production and Bloom were well-received by both critics and audiences alike.

Bloom’s additional film credits include “Ned Kelly” opposite Heath Ledger; Wolfgang Peterson’s “Troy” opposite Brad Pitt; the Cayman Islands ensemble “Haven” opposite Zoe Saldana; “New York, I Love You” opposite Christina Ricci; Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut “Sympathy for Delicious” opposite Laura Linney; Horton Foote’s “Main Street” opposite Colin Firth and Patricia Clarkson; and Paul W.S. Anderson’s “The Three Musketeers” opposite Christoph Waltz. Orlando made his producorial debut via his Viddywell Production Company in “The Good Doctor” in which he stars opposite Michael Peña, J.K. Simmons, and Taraji P. Henson.

In 2013, Orlando starred opposite Forest Whitaker in the closing night film of the Cannes Film Festival, Jerome Salle’s “Zulu.” He then starred as ‘Romeo’ in the Broadway production of “Romeo and Juliet,” directed by David Leveaux. NY Times critic Ben Brantley wrote that “Mr. Bloom…keeps surprising. For once, we have a Romeo who evolves substantively, from a posturing youth in love with love to a man who discovers the startling revelation of real love, with a last-act descent into bilious, bitter anger that verges on madness.”

This past December, Orlando reprised his role as ‘Legolas’ in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug,” for New Line Cinema and MGM. The Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD will be available April 8, 2014 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Bloom will next be seen in the final film of “The Hobbit” trilogy, “There and Back Again,” to be released on December 17th 2014.

Orlando was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador after he took his first trip to Nepal with the organization in 2007. In December 2012, he visited UNICEF supported programs in South Africa to help benefit children and refugees. This month, Orlando will visit Syrian refugees in Jordan with the organization. Bloom also works with Free the Children and spoke to 18,000 kids at their first “We Day” in California this year. Other charities and organizations he works with include Peace First, Make-A-Wish, and Global Green.

Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and guest speakers   Brian Holland and Bill Withers will help Ray Parker Jr. unveil the 2,518th star in the category of Recording at 7065 Hollywood Boulevard.

Best known for the No. 1 smash hit “Ghostbusters,” Ray Parker Jr. has enjoyed quite a versatile career. He is a much sought-after guitarist, with a number of other hits to his credit, a great performer, songwriter and producer. He has been awarded the British Bafta Award as well as a Grammy and Golden Globe Award. He has also been an Academy Award® nominee.

Born May 1, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, Ray started out as a session guitarist, while still in high school, playing on sessions recorded for the legendary Holland Dozier Holland labels, Hot Wax and Invictus. Ray performed with the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, the Spinners, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and other Motown luminaries who appeared at the Twenty Grand Club. In 1972, Stevie Wonder called 18-year-old Ray and asked him to play behind him on a tour Stevie was doing with the Rolling Stones. Ray thought it was a prank call and hung up the phone. Wonder called back and convinced Ray that he was the real deal by singing “Superstition”   over the phone! During the following two years, Ray  played on Stevie Wonder’s album, Talking Book.

Moving from Detroit to Los Angeles, Parker got into session work playing on sides by Herbie Hancock, Leon Haywood, Barry White, Diana Ross, Gene Page and more. He also appeared in the Bill Cosby – Sidney Poitier comedy film classic Uptown Saturday Night

Deciding to become a recording artist, Parker signed a deal with Arista Records in 1977. His first LP, Raydio, went gold, peaking at No. 8 R&B in the spring of 1978. The LP included the hit single ”Jack and Jill” which hit No. 5 R&B, No. 8 on the pop charts, and went gold;  Hits continued in 1979 with Ray Parker Jr and Raydio’s gold, No. 4 Rock On album.  The single ”You Can’t Change That” hit No. 3 R&B and No. 9 Pop. In 1980 gold album, “Two Places at the Same Time”, with same title single hit No. 6 R&B and No. 30 pop. In 1981, No. 1 R&B gold album, “A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do)”, with same title single was the first song Parker sung all the way through without trading vocals, held the No. 1 R&B spot for 2 weeks going to No. 4 on the pop charts. In 1982 No. 1 R&B gold album, “The Other Woman” with same title single hit No. 2 R&B for 4 weeks going to No. 4 on the pop charts, along with “Let Me Go” No. 3 R&B and No. 36 pop, “Bad Boy” No. 6 R&B and No. 35 pop.  In 1983, “I Still Can’t Get Over Loving You” held No. 12 on both R&B and pop charts.  In 1984 Ray Parker Jr’s hit Ghostbusters held No. 1 R&B and No. 1 on the pop charts for 4 weeks!  It is estimated that Ghostbusters had sold over 35 million in various versions. The “Ghostbusters” music video is one of the funniest and star-studded videos ever made with breakdancing Bill Murray style. Also in 1984 Ray’s greatest hits LP “Chartbusters” went gold and the single “Jamie” hit No. 12 R&B and No. 14 on the pop charts. In 1987 “I Don’t Think That Man Should Sleep Alone” hit No. 5 R&B and duet with Natalie Cole, “Over You” went to No. 10 R&B. Ray also had three instrumental hits, “For Those Who Like To Groove,” “Aftermidnite,” and, “Mismaloya Beach”.

Hollywood Chamber to honor Jack H. Harris with star on the Walk of Fame.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce that film producer Jack. H. Harris will be honored with the 2,517th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. “The Chamber prides itself on selecting people who are innovators of the film world. Mr. Harris’ film “The Blob,” is one great example of the creativity that Hollywood puts forth to the world,” stated Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. “We are thrilled to honor Mr. Harris with a star next to fellow film innovators Dennis Muren and Rick Baker.”

Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and guest speakers Larry Cohen and Brian Witten will help Harris unveil the 2,517th star in the category of Motion Pictures at 6764 Hollywood Boulevard in front of The Guinness World Record Museum.

Jack Henry Harris was born in Philadelphia in 1918. His father’s job as a movie theater projectionist and ultimately a booker in a film exchange may have first ignited young Jack’s love of films. Both parents imbued their son with a strong work ethic that would help him not only survive, but thrive in the frenetically changing world of the movie business.

Harris grew up to become a uniquely successful producer-distributor in the film industry and has been involved in nearly every phase of show business for more than 80 years. He has distributed more than 1,000 films in his career.

Young Jack performed professionally as a child entertainer in the vaudeville theaters along the Eastern seaboard dancing the Apache with his younger sister Clair.  By the time he was nine, he appeared in two silent feature films, capturing hearts in the first as a wide-eyed street urchin grabbing for coins in post World War I Moscow, followed by a performance in “Abie’s Irish Bride.” This early brush with the entertainment business created a burning desire in Harris that was nourished throughout his teen years as he steadily strived towards his goal: motion picture production.

As a young boy, Harris discovered a gift of art that complemented his love of movie stars, and he found himself creating caricatures of the famous big screen figures who came through town to perform. These caricatures included Mary Pickford, Eddie Cantor, George Burns and Gracie Allen, and even a future U.S. President, the cigar-chomping Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared in the Philadelphia Record Newspaper.

Upon graduation from high school, Harris became an usher for a theater circuit, where he earned $10 per week.  Within one year, at the tender age of 18, he was promoted to the position of theater manager. In two years’ time, he managed three theaters and his innate showmanship resulted in packed houses, drawing in young viewers who piled in for a bonus event all his own, “Uncle Jack’s Kiddie Show.” Within five years, he presided over 16 theaters and won a national exploitation contest that included a trip to Hollywood with an onset visit to "Little Nellie Kelly,” starring Judy Garland.

Harris took a detour from the Hollywood scene to answer his country’s call by enlisting in the U.S. army. After 4 ½ years of dedicated service and a distinguished military record, Harris returned home to Philadelphia, spending the next five years working as a publicity and sales representative for a variety of studios. In 1953, he opened his own sub-distribution office in Philadelphia and later opened two more offices.

In 1954, he acquired the rights to nationally distribute a feature film from the Boy Scouts of America entitled “Jamboree”.  To maximize distribution in the United States, Harris and Boy Scout executive, Irvine H. Milgate, oversaw the film’s distribution by traveling together throughout the U.S.--logging over 30,000 miles by plane. During the long hours spent traveling, the two discussed the ingredients necessary for box office success--and in 1958, these discussions resulted in the eventual production of “The Blob,” a Paramount release which set box office records all over the world. It was in “The Blob” that Harris’ discovery, Steve McQueen, was first brought to the attention of the major studios.

Harris went on to produce a second feature, “4-D Man,” introducing stars Robert Lansing, Lee Meriwether and Patty Duke to audiences in widescreen color and a third, the Cinemascope color adventure-thriller, “Dinosaurus.”

In 1961, Harris started an international distribution company, Jack H. Harris Enterprises. Its premiere release was “Paradisio,” the first nudie movie in 3-D, which became an outstanding box office smash.

Displaying his usual visionary acumen, Harris went on to work on “My Secret Life,” followed by two Jack Nicholson-starring westerns, “The Shooting” and “Ride in the Worldwind.”  Later Harris and son Anthony produced “Beware of The Blob” directed by Larry Hagman and starring Robert Walker Jr., Godfrey Cambridge, Carol Lynley and Shelley Berman. This mighty sequel to Jack H. Harris’ first production went into worldwide release.

Additional films on the Harris release schedule included: “Schlock,” “Season of the Witch,” “Bone,” “Teenager,” “Dark Star,” “Ape,” “The Eyes of Laura Mars” “Astro Zombies” and “Star Slammer.”

Harris is still going strong today in both production and distribution, always in step with the latest innovations and trends. In 1991, Harris and his wife writer/producer Judith Parker Harris teamed on the production of “Blobermouth.” This zany comedy utilized the actual 1958 “The Blob” film, enhanced by  additional special effects and music, and dubbed with all-new comic  dialogue by the famed improv group, Kent Skov’s L.A. Connection.  As the “Blob” speaks in this film, the ravenous red menace sports a hilarious animated mouth that cracks jokes when it’s not devouring the townfolk.

Currently in development, Harris and his wife are in collaboration with producers, Brian Witten and Richard Saperstein on another remake of the ever popular classic “The Blob.”

All of the Harris titles were transferred to Worldwide Entertainment Corporation in 1974. There’s always something fresh to look forward to from the creative mind of Jack H. Harris. Original productions are also in discussion, including a possible stage musical of “The Blob.” New young producers, directors and screenwriters are continually clamoring to do remakes of “Dinosaurus,” “4-D Man,” and other films in Harris’ library.

Mazursky’s career behind the camera would continue for the next two decades as he would direct an impressive string of quirky, dramatic and critically-popular films including Alex in Wonderland (1970), Blume in Love (1973), Harry and Tonto (1974), the autobiographical Next Stop, Greenwich Village (1976), An Unmarried Woman (1978), Willie & Phil (1980), Tempest (1982), Moscow on the Hudson (1984), Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), Moon Over Parador (1988), Enemies, a Love Story (1989) and Scenes from a Mall (1991).

Following his filmmaking satire The Pickle (1993), Mazursky has worked only sporadically as a director on such films as Faithful (1996), Winchell (1998), Coast to Coast (2003) and most recently the documentary Yippee (2006).

In his autobiography Show Me the Magic (1999), Mazursky recounts his experiences in filmmaking and with several well-known screen personalities including Peter Sellers.

Mazursky has appeared as himself in a number of documentaries, including A Decade Under the Influence, New York at the Movies and Screenwriters: Words Into Image. In Moon Over Parador, with the Rio Opera House available for only three days of shooting, Mazursky cast himself as a dictator’s mother when Judith Malina was unavailable, playing the character in drag.

In recent years, Mazursky had a small part as “Sunshine” the poker dealer in The Sopranos. He also appeared in five episodes of Season 4 of Curb Your Enthusiasm as Mel Brooks’ associate Norm; he later reprised the role in an episode in Season 7.

Mazursky has received five Academy Award®nominations, four for his screenplay writing on Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), Harry and Tonto (1974), An Unmarried Woman (1978) and Enemies, a Love Story (1989), and once as producer of An Unmarried Woman (nominated for Best Picture). In 2000, Mazursky was the recipient of the Austin Film Festival’s Distinguished Screenwriter Award.

Mazursky is involved in the following charities: Amnesty International, Brooklyn College and Antioch College.
