observed by Hollywood Forever’s client families, and
she is privileged to be a part of each service
whether it is simple or elaborate.
Currently, Ms. O’Farrill is also serving as

successful Toy Drive for Children’s Hospital Los
Angeles and has become a holiday tradition for the
Association.
Judy Kloner is President of Assistance
League® of Southern California (ALSC), and directs
all facets of the non-profit organization to provide
a broad range of essential human services to people
with critical needs from Hollywood, the San Fernando
Valley, and the greater Los Angeles area. Ms.
Kloner implements new and innovative programs and

actively seeks partnerships and alliances with

West Valley Region where she spent twelve years
working closely with the Canoga Park and Reseda
communities. In 2007, she was promoted to Regional
Administrator of the Hollywood & Central Region of
the CRA/LA. She now oversees seven redevelopment
project areas including Hollywood and East
Hollywood.
Ms. Lambert has a Bachelor’s degree in Political
Science from the University of California at Davis
and a Master’s in City Planning from the University
of California at Berkeley.
Sarah MacPherson is the Associate Executive
Director of the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance,
the nonprofit that manages two successful and
innovative business improvement districts (BIDs) in
the historic core of Hollywood. Over the past
decade, she has played a critical role in the
revitalization of what is now Los Angeles’ most
glamorous livable community. Her responsibilities
have included implementation of numerous capital
improvement projects on and around Hollywood
Boulevard, and public advocacy on a variety of
planning and public safety issues.
Ms. MacPherson’s work has pushed the BIDs beyond the
template of “clean and safe.” Her passion for
planning led to the creation of the Hollywood Alleys
Plan, which she completed as a consultant to the CRA
and is a blueprint for activating underutilized
alleys. Ms. MacPherson also has a strong
professional and personal interest in developing
long-term solutions to end homelessness in Hollywood
by providing permanent supportive housing. To help
spur a community-wide conversation about
homelessness, she has facilitated relationships
among property owners, business leaders and social
service providers and served as an organizer for two
recent volunteer-driven homeless counts. Ms.
MacPherson holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography
and a Master’s in Urban Planning from UCLA.

Honorary Mayor Johnny Grant will be honored at the
Entertainment Industry Luncheon on September 26, at
12:00 noon in the Hollywood Roosevelt’s historic
Blossom Room. Grant will be presented with the
Hollywood Star Award. He becomes the second
recipient of the award, after Fred Rheinstein of The
Post Group. The award is presented to someone in
the entertainment industry who has made a real
contribution to Hollywood and the industry. Along
with his Walk of Fame officiating, Grant is
celebrating his upcoming 60th overseas tour visiting
and entertaining our military troops. On December 1,
he will be the Grand Marshal of the Guantanamo Bay
Christmas Parade.
Luncheon information:
For years, the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce and other business organizations have
lobbied in Sacramento seeking action by the
California State Legislature to preserve the
Hollywood film industry, with little to show by way
of results. The Chamber will use its annual
Entertainment Industry Luncheon to zero in on why
the Legislature is allowing an important industry to
be threatened.
“Many
in the industry considered last year to be our best
chance to get support in Sacramento, since our bill,
AB777 was authored by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez
and supported by Governor Schwarzenegger,” said
Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber President & CEO.
“The failure of AB777 was very discouraging to many
people, who ask if we couldn’t get the bill through
with the support of both the Governor and the
Assembly Speaker, then how can we ever get a bill
approved? We seem to be caught in the tug-of-war
that exists between Northern and Southern
California. Meanwhile, other states are continuing
to woo our industry and to build state-of-the art
facilities.”
With
many Hollywood businesses suffering from the State’s
inaction, the Chamber has chosen “Sacramento and
Hollywood: Can We Close the Gap” as the topic for
its 2007 Entertainment Industry Luncheon, which will
take place on Wednesday, September 26. Registration
will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon running
from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m.
Tickets to the luncheon are available to Chamber
members at $75 each, or tables of ten at $800.
Non-members will pay $90 for admission.
Moderating a panel of government officials and
industry representatives will be Steve MacDonald,
President of FilmL.A., Inc. Panel members include:
Assemblyman Paul Krekorian, who is chair of the
Assembly Select Committee on the Preservation of the
Entertainment Industry; Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas,
who chairs the Senate Sub-Committee on Professional
Sports and the Entertainment Industry; Stan Brooks,
the chair of the California Film Commission; Kent
McCord, First Vice National President of the Screen
Actors Guild; Assemblyman Michael Feuer; and Lisa
Rawlins, Senior Vice President, Studio & Production
Affairs, Warner Bros.
Presenting sponsors as of press deadlines included
Paramount Pictures and CRA/LA. Additional sponsors
include Andrews International, Paramount Contracting
and Gemstar/TV Guide.

Hollywood is Ready for Take-off at LAX!
LOS ANGELES, CA – September 17,
2007 – The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has
partnered with travel retailer Hudson Group, best
known for its national newsstand brand Hudson News,
among other retail brands, to develop Hollywood, a
trendy new specialty store devoted to all things
Hollywood. The store is scheduled to “premier” this
week in the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT)
of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Global
Icons, the Chamber’s exclusive licensing agency,
negotiated the deal.
“As a company, Hudson Group is
committed to helping LAX to revitalize and realize
its potential as a world-class shopping experience,”
said Joseph DiDomizio, executive vice president and
chief operating officer, Hudson Group. “Powered by
Hudson’s exacting standards for store design and top
quality merchandise, we expect Hollywood to become a
great favorite with locals as well as visitors to
LA. It will add significantly to the luster that
Hudson has already brought to the airport with our
dazzling new Hudson News newsstands and other
exciting retail concepts, like Life is good and Kids
Works.”
Hollywood has been created to
reflect the legendary reputation of Tinsel-town, and
prominently features the famous Hollywood Sign and
Hollywood Walk of Fame star logos. Travelers will
have the chance to take home their own little piece
of Hollywood with special movie memorabilia and
other branded merchandise. With some 800 square feet
of prime retail space, the dramatically appointed
Hollywood store will offer airport travelers a
unique shopping experience, along with authentic,
high quality merchandise. The product mix includes
men’s and women’s apparel & accessories, gift &
collectibles, house wares & home furnishings, as
well as theatrical DVDs. Shoppers will be immersed
in a world of entertainment through multiple
monitors playing both classic and contemporary movie
releases on plasma screens throughout the store.
The grand opening of the
Hollywood store in LAX is scheduled for Sept. 18.
The team would like nothing better than to expand
the concept with additional spaces in LAX and other
Southern California airports at some time in the
future.
“The Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce is delighted to be able to seal a
relationship with Hudson Group, a company with an
outstanding reputation for airport service across
the country,” said Leron Gubler, Chamber president &
CEO. “This partnership represents a new opportunity
for the Chamber to expand the reach of the Hollywood
brand into a new channel for us – the airport
retailing environment.” “Hollywood continues to draw
massive audiences around the world with its glamour
and starstudded features,” noted Jeff Lotman, CEO of
Global Icons. “The creation of the Hollywood shop is
a natural fit for the TBIT terminal, whose
international travelers will have a particular
interest in stocking up on Hollywood gifts and
souvenirs. It is the perfect retail destination for
tourists who want to return home with great memories
of their visit to Los Angeles and, of course, to
glamorous Hollywood, California.”

Stars Temporarily Removed for Construction
A story in the Los
Angeles Times caused a media sensation about the
removal of 70 stars for the construction of the
Hollywood & Vine complex. The stars had actually
been removed about three months ago, but their
absence had gone unnoticed by the press until the
Times story. Normally, it is the Chamber’s
preference that stars be preserved “in-place” during
the construction of major projects with scaffolding
built over and above to allow pedestrian access. In
the case of the Hollywood & Vine project,
construction was going to the curb, making it
impossible to leave the stars in-place. The stars
have been placed in protective storage until they
can be replaced as part of a rebuilt sidewalk at the
conclusion of construction in 2009. The Chamber
regrets the removal of the stars but notes that the
new development will be a major improvement for the
area and will allow the stars to be showcased in a
newly-revamped walk.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
ENDOWS MUSICIANS INSTITUTE WITH $10,000 FOR
SCHOLARSHIPS
HOLLYWOOD, CA – The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
Community Foundation has committed to fund its
largest grant of the year – $10,000 to the Musicians
Foundation, the non-profit fundraising entity of
Musicians Institute, providing an annual scholarship
of $2,500/year over the next four years for
qualified MI students.
The newly established endowment will be known as the
Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation Scholarship;
recipients will be selected by the Institute for
their dedication to pursuing a career in music,
among additional criteria considerations.
Foundation Chair Jeffrey C. Briggs of Briggs Law
Office in Hollywood says, “Musicians Institute is
‘the foot in the door’ into the entertainment
industry. It is with great pride and high
expectations that we are creating this link between
Hollywood’s business leaders, Musicians Institute
and our future industry’s workforce and talent.”
Since 1977, Musicians Institute [originally known as
the Guitar Institute of Technology] has been the
leader in the industry, providing 180 musicians,
writers, artisans and other experts as instructors
to approximately 1,200 students each scholastic
quarter while offering degrees and certificate
programs in every facet of the industry from
performing and recording to music business,
film/music video-making, guitar crafting, and more.
Throughout its 30-year history, the Institute has
diversified its program base and significantly
increased the length of its alumni list, which
includes band members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers;
the Nine Inch Nails; Weezer; and guitar player Keith
Wyatt, who personifies MI’s ‘practice what you
preach’ philosophy.
Mr. Wyatt was a GIT student in 1977. “I attended [GIT]
to ‘fill the holes’ in my guitar knowledge, and so I
could learn how to make enough money to stay in Los
Angeles,” he recalls. Three months after his June
1978 graduation, Mr. Wyatt taught guitar playing.
In 1987, he headed the MI guitar program.
At present, he is Vice President of Programs.
Still, he is quick to point out, “Being a musician
is the foundation for everything else.” His band,
the Blasters, still tours internationally. “This
Summer we have festival dates and a US tour,
followed by tour dates in Europe.”

THE HOLLYWOOD
CHRISTMAS PARADE STOPS ON A DIAMOND;
HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER TO REINVEST EFFORTS INTO ITS
COMMUNITY
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Jeff Briggs, Chair of the Board of
Directors of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce,
along with Leron Gubler, Chamber President and CEO,
announced today that the 2006 Diamond Anniversary of
the legendary Hollywood Christmas Parade was the
Parade’s finale.
The Parade has undergone several makeovers
throughout its history, including changing its name
from the Santa Claus Lane Parade to the Hollywood
Christmas Parade in 1978, to attract celebrities and
rekindle dwindling national interest in and
television audiences for parades.
Since 1998 the Chamber has struggled to secure a
television contract necessary to attract celebrity
participation and, in turn, to cover the expense of
putting a first class parade on Hollywood
Boulevard. In 2002 the Chamber granted a license to
an outside party, who reinvented the broadcast as
the Blockbuster Hollywood Christmas Spectacular.
The Chamber returned the Parade to its traditional
format the following year. Since then, the
Hollywood Chamber’s Board of Directors has struggled
each year to absorb the financial impact of
dwindling sponsor and advertiser support.
Three years ago, in an effort to upgrade the quality
of the Parade and generate additional sponsor,
broadcast, and celebrity interest in supporting the
annual event attended by hundreds of thousands of
spectators every Sunday after Thanksgiving, the
Board authorized a substantial one-time loss if
necessary to ensure the Parade’s production. KTLA
re-entered the picture as the only broadcast partner
willing to pay a broadcast fee, which helped to keep
the Parade afloat. Without the annual distraction
of securing a television contract, the Chamber was
able to devote its energies to working with KTLA to
improve the quality of the street parade and the
telecast, which was recognized with a local Emmy for
Best Live Event in 2005.
“Thanks to KTLA and our sponsors and advertisers,
and a growing list of celebrities in attendance, we
were able to keep the Parade going through the 75th
Anniversary,” said Mr. Briggs. “But the competition
for our broadcast has made it tough to keep our
ratings high enough to make the production viable at
the level necessary to ensure a parade worthy of
Hollywood.”
Though the Parade has continued to draw large crowds
to Hollywood – and has been applauded by legislators
and community leaders as a holiday staple of
Southern California -- it has been unable to meet
the ratings expectations of television advertisers.
With a declining television audience for parades,
and without a national sponsor in place, paying the
$1 million cost of the parade and securing celebrity
participation has continued to be a struggle. Local
businesses also have raised concerns about yet
another closure of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards,
particularly over the busiest shopping weekend of
the year.
“After an extensive review of many alternatives,
including date, time, and format changes, the
Chamber Board reluctantly determined that the
Chamber is not in a financial position to continue
subsidizing significant Parade losses on an annual
basis,” said Mr. Briggs. “With the Chamber’s
ongoing commitment to the revitalization of a
rapidly-growing Hollywood, the Board also was
concerned about the substantial personnel resources
required to keep the Parade going. We plan to
reallocate resources to meet the growing needs of
the area in developing jobs, office space, retail
services for our new residents, and
parking/transportation solutions. We also will look
hard for an alternative holiday event to serve our
growing community.”
In 1928, the Parade was created to draw Angelenos to
Hollywood’s merchants. According to Chamber
President and CEO Leron Gubler, however, what draws
people to Hollywood today is a combination of new
residential and office developments, revitalized
streetscapes, the city’s best crime reduction rate,
rapid transit accessibility, tourist
theatre-dining-retail-museum attractions, and
related good jobs--all of which make for increased
mixed-use livability. “Our Board of Directors made
the hard decision to reinvest our talent, time and
dollars from the Parade into business and community
advocacy programs,” explained Mr. Gubler. “Our
proposed ‘Hollywood Central Park’ over the ‘101’
freeway; strengthening the newly formed East
Hollywood and Sunset & Vine Business Improvement
Districts; addressing the district’s parking and
mobility needs; securing new federal, state and
local legislation to fight runaway film production
and its devastating impact on local jobs and
production-support businesses; and encouraging
work-training and arts programs that make Hollywood
an even better place to visit and also a great place
to work and live, all require our full devotion.”
The Honorary Mayor of Hollywood, Johnny Grant, a
longtime Hollywood resident and Chamber leader who
collaborated with the Parade’s 1978 Grand Marshal
Bob Hope in entertaining United States troops
overseas for numerous years, may miss the Parade
more than anyone. “The annual event is almost as
old as I am,” he half-jokes, half-laments. “Times
change, and so do traditions. We all will miss the
Hollywood Christmas Parade – which for years was
known as the largest celebrity parade in the world,
and the third most popular after the Macy’s and Rose
Parades. But I am a realist. When an event
continues to operate only at a deficit despite
everyone’s best efforts, it’s time to re-channel
efforts and dollars into new community projects and
programs. I will direct my time and energy to
refurbishing the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
For more than 87 years, the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce has provided leadership, business
development resources, networking, and government
affairs programs and services to keep the Hollywood
business and residential communities safe, relevant
and economically vital. Jeff Briggs of Briggs Law
Office in Hollywood is the Chair of the Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation.
At present, one thousand businesses, professionals
and nonprofits are members of the Hollywood Chamber
of Commerce, which is ranked as the second largest
chamber in the City of Los Angeles and third largest
in the County of Los Angeles.

Robert William “Bob”
Barker, one of the most respected – and successful –
icons in television history, recently announced that
after his half-century in television, he would
retire from the highly rated “The Price is Right” in
June 2007, after holding the job for thirty-five
years.
Bob Barker was born
in Darrington, Washington, to his mother, Matilda
(“Tillie”) Valandra, a schoolteacher, and his
father, Byron John Barker, an electrical power
foreman who died in a fall from a utility pole in
1929. He graduated from Central High School in
Springfield, Missouri, where he was in a three-piece
jazz band, “The Scatters,” in the mid-1940s. Mr.
Barker attended Drury College [also in Springfield]
on a basketball scholarship, but World War II
interrupted his education.
He served in the
Navy as a fighter pilot, and was later assigned to a
seagoing squadron. After the war, Mr. Barker
returned to Drury, graduating summa cum laude with a
degree in economics.
It was during his
time at Drury College that Bob Barker worked his
first “media job” at KTTS-FM Radio in Springfield.
Next, he worked at a radio station in Florida and a
station in California where he hosted an
audience-participation radio show. During one of
his programs, game-show producer Ralph Edwards tuned
in and liked what he heard … and hired Mr. Barker as
host of the game show Truth or Consequences.
His start date was December 31, 1956; he continued
as the show’s host for the next eighteen years.
On September 4,
1972, Bob Barker was selected to host the CBS
revival of The Price is Right. In
2006, the show celebrated 35 consecutive years on
the air. It is the longest-running television game
show in North American history; the longest running

After six long years, the
proposed East Hollywood BID's fate
will be determined on Tuesday morning at City Hall
On Tuesday, January 9 at 10:00
a.m., representatives from the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce and property owners will testify in support
of the proposed East Hollywood Property and Business
Improvement District (BID) before the Los Angeles
City Council, at which time, the Council will
conduct a public hearing to determine whether to
establish the District and levy assessments; and
immediately authorize the counting of the ballots to
determine if the District will become a reality.
[Please note: the public
announcement of the tabulation of ballots will occur
on Wednesday, January 10]
For the past six years, at the
original request of former State Assemblymember and
Los Angeles City Council Member Jackie Goldberg, the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce -- with the continued
support of Los Angeles City Council President Eric
Garcetti -- has worked to bring unity and consensus
among East Hollywood stakeholders on the creation of
the Business Improvement District (BID).
During these six years, the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has hosted numerous
meetings on the proposed BID, and invested more than
$100,000 in staff time and other resources to make
this happen for the proposed District.
The proposed East Hollywood
Property and Business Improvement District
boundaries run along Vermont Avenue from Highway 101
(Hollywood Freeway) to Hollywood Boulevard in East
Hollywood; from Hollywood Boulevard to Vermont
Avenue to Edgemont Street; from Edgemont Street to
Hollywood Boulevard and then Sunset Boulevard;
continuing from Sunset Boulevard to Edgemont Street
... and returning, again, to Hollywood Boulevard.
If the votes are sufficient,
the District will have a five-year life span, with
implementation and completion of the District’s
Management District Plan beginning immediately, and
retroactively, to January 1, 2007 through December
31, 2011. After five years, if the District were to
continue, a new Management District Plan, and a new
Engineer’s Report would need to be prepared and the
petition, ballot, and hearing processes would also
have to be repeated for the District to be renewed.
The Event:
Proponents of the East
Hollywood BID will appear before the Los Angeles
Council, at which time, the Council will conduct a
public hearing to determine whether to establish the
District and authorize the counting of the ballots
of 85 East Hollywood property owners [142 parcels]
on whether they agree to be assessed on the proposed
BID.
The East Hollywood BID is
designed to improve the commercial area of East
Hollywood, primarily along the major corridors of
Vermont Avenue, Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood
Boulevard and a small portion of Edgemont Street.
If approved, these BID services
would include: physical improvement/landscaping
programs; maintenance services to increase the
frequency of litter and debris removal; machine
washing of sidewalks; graffiti removal; a marketing
and promotions program targeting the positive image
enhancement of the area; advocacy to represent the
parcel owners in local government decisions and
acquire funds and grants to improve the East
Hollywood District area, increase commercial
activities, attract new businesses, and increase
patronage to properties located within the
boundaries of the District.
The Day/Date: Tuesday,
January 9
The Time: 10:00 a.m.
[Following the public hearing, proponents of the
East Hollywood BID will immediately go to the Los
Angeles City Clerk's office for the counting of the
East Hollywood BID ballots; property owners –
representing at least 51 percent of the proposed
assessment – must agree to the formation of the
District for it to be created.]
Speakers at the Los Angeles
City Council Meeting who will speak on behalf of the
proposed East Hollywood BID:
Leron Gubler, President and
CEO, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce; Jackie Goldberg,
former State Assemblymember, District 45; Former
City Councilmember, District 13; Jeff Zarrinnam,
CEO, Ramada Hollywood

Hollywood Chamber President and CEO Leron Gubler
credits the Hollywood Entertainment District with
being one of the major players in the Hollywood
revitalization effort. “The BID has transformed
central Hollywood into one of the most enviable –
and successful – tourist destinations in the world
by initiating private-public partnerships to create
a cleaner, more attractive and safer Hollywood.
This includes its pioneering efforts to install
security cameras along Hollywood Boulevard and
planting trees throughout the District.”
Inspired by the Times Square BID and spearheaded by
a committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce,
the Hollywood Entertainment District was formed in
1996. The initial BID, 1996-2001, was supported by
40 property owners who agreed to invest $600,000 a
year for five years to revitalize Hollywood. This
included the area along Hollywood Boulevard from
LaBrea on the west to McCadden on the east.
In 1998, the second phase of the Hollywood
Entertainment District BID was formed, expanding the
District’s boundaries on Hollywood Boulevard from
McCadden on the west to Gower on the east. This
District was endorsed by a group of 150 property
owners and the Los Angeles City Council, and began
operations in 1999 as a $1.5 million District with a
three-year life-span.
In 2003, the Los Angeles City Council approved the
renewal of the BID for another five years, from
January 2004 to December 2008. The current
Hollywood Entertainment District BID includes 165
property owners, who are assessed a total of $2.3
million annually.

HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER BOARD OF DIRECTORS VOTES TO
SUPPORT:
WORKFORCE HOUSING AND LONGER TERM LIMITS FOR CITY
ELECTED OFFICIALS
HOLLYWOOD, CA –
Yesterday, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Board
of Directors unanimously voted to support Measure H
on the November ballot – to secure a $1 billion bond
to fund workforce housing in the City of Los
Angeles, and overwhelmingly approved to support
Measure R, which would extend term limits for City
policy makers, and create more stringent reforms in
the area of campaign finance and ethics.
Hollywood Chamber
President and CEO Leron Gubler said that the Board
responded passionately to both measures – as
business leaders and as residents of the City of Los
Angeles. “Hollywood has long been an advocate for
new workforce housing to accommodate the area’s
growing business and industry needs, and as such,
our Board of Directors applauds the City’s
leadership on Measure H for its humane and
business-practical strategy to address this critical
issue on a citywide level. Even in the current
housing slump, the cost of purchasing a new home is
prohibitive for most white-collar and even
platinum-collar workers. We can’t attract new
businesses, and the jobs they bring to the area, if
we cannot offer them and their families an
affordable place to live … that is not outside the
City’s borders.”
On Measure R, Mr.
Gubler stated that “When the City’s two-term limit
reform was initially approved by voters, it was
lauded as a revolutionary experiment. Today, we
know better. It is an experiment that has failed to
impress. If Measure R is approved by the voters, it
will allow council members who initiate city laws,
policies and programs – the time needed to implement
them.”

IT’S OFFICIAL: STATE SAYS,
“HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD,”
AS GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER
SIGNS AB 588 INTO LAW,
“THE HOLLYWOOD STATISTICAL
REPORTING AREA” BILL
HOLLYWOOD, CA – It’s official; Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger has signed AB 588, “The Hollywood
Statistical Reporting Area” bill, sponsored by the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and championed by the
community’s state representatives, Assemblymembers
Jackie Goldberg and Paul Koretz.
Upon hearing the news, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
President and CEO Leron Gubler said that this is
great news for Hollywood. “This is the official
‘Hooray for Hollywood’ happy ending that will give
Hollywood, the undisputed historic heart of the
entertainment industry and a very important
community economically to the entire State of
California, the data and statistics it needs to
continue its revitalization and economic
development.”
Following the lead of the San Fernando Valley in
securing passage of AB 2207, the “San Fernando
Statistical Reporting Area” bill, the Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce made the passage of AB 588 its
top economic development priority for 2006,
explained Rochelle Silsbee, Vice President of Public
Policy for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
AB 588 enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support from
the State Senate and Assembly, said Ms. Silsbee.
“It was also unanimously endorsed by the Los Angeles
City Council, and championed by Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa, who wrote a personal letter of support
on AB 588 to Governor Schwarzenegger.”
“Hollywood is the most recognized and respected
brand name in Southern California, the state of
California, and just perhaps, in the world,” added
Mr. Gubler. “Now that AB 588 has been signed into
law, it will give area developers, businesses,
schools and social service agencies access to basic,
but critical data, necessary in determining some of
the area’s most important projects that will both
promote and sustain economic development and job
creation, as well as improve the quality of life in
Hollywood, as defined by the City’s community plan.”

HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER DRAWS
STRAWS TO DECIDE IF ARNOLD WILL “BE BACK”
DURING ITS 18TH ANNUAL
BUSINESS AND TOURISM EXPO, SEPT. 27
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Approximately 300-500 business and
civic leaders will decide if California’s Governor
for the next four years speaks with an Austrian
accent [or not]; bench presses boulders [or not];
and brings in big bucks at the box office [or not]
by engaging in an unofficial straw poll during the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce 2006 Hollywood
Business and Tourism Expo on Wednesday, September
27, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the historic Hollywood
Roosevelt Hotel, 7000 Hollywood Boulevard.
Admission to the 2006 Business and Tourism Expo,
which includes access to ‘Hollywood insiders’; some
of the area’s most popular entertainment,
restaurant, night club, sports, boutique and tourism
venues; and an array of complimentary fine food
samplings and other refreshments, is $10 per person
for Hollywood Chamber members; $15 per person for
non-members. [Validated parking for the event is
available for $2 at the Hollywood & Highland
complex.] For
reservations or more information,

Angelides or Arnold? Salary or no salary? Big
screen action hero or simply, state treasurer? And
then there is the big question on everyone’s minds:
Will the current Governor gain favor for having
Hollywood in the blood that is pumped through his
still sizeable biceps? Or will Angelides get the
edge for proposing a tax break for small business
owners? Hollywood Chamber President and CEO Leron
Gubler dismisses the idea of a Hollywood-bias
ballot. “Being an A-list actor may win favor among
our community’s business leaders at the theaters,
but not when choosing who should hold the state’s
top job.”
Although Mr. Gubler wouldn’t formally announce a
pre-poll favorite, he thinks that the leader of the
upcoming straw selection process will probably be
Johnny Grant, the Honorary Mayor of Hollywood. “In
the past, he has been a formidable unofficial
straw-poll candidate for the Office of Governor.
Why should this year be any different?”

HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER:
LAUSD MISSES THE MARK,
ENDORSES AB 1381
HOLLYWOOD, CA –
Joining a large coalition of civic and community
leaders, and business organizations – including Los
Angeles City Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Los
Angeles City Council, and the California State
Federation of Labor – and in an effort to give the
Mayor and the Board of Education more control over,
and accountability for, the Los Angeles Unified
School District (LAUSD), the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce has voted to endorse AB 1381 [Nunez/Frommer/Perata/Romero].
a proposal for reforming LAUSD, “The Gloria Romero
Educational Reform Act of 2006.”
“Had the school
district been an independent contractor with the
County of Los Angeles, it would have been given its
walking papers years ago,” laments Leron Gubler,
president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce. “Fifty percent of our minority students
do not graduate from high school in the allotted
four-year time period, and those that do … find it
difficult to ‘make the grade’ in the region’s
workforce, simply because they lack the basic skills
of reading, writing, and arithmetic.”
For more than 86
years, the Hollywood Chamber has invested money,
talent and time to support public education programs
and legislation for our youth – the area’s future
business employers, managers and workforce. It has
lobbied in Sacramento and Washington, DC for
education building funds, and literacy programs;
supported teacher incentives; and through the
Chamber’s Community Foundation, donated more than
$100,000 in the past decade to educational
organizations throughout the region.
“Yet, the results
continue to disappoint,” offers Mr. Gubler. “Our
members who attempt to hire (LAUSD) graduates
complain with greater frequency – and frustration --
that many of the applicants they encounter can’t
complete a simple job application, and are unable to
pass standard job proficiency tests for entry level
positions; skills that require a modicum of
knowledge in composition, math, and problem-solving
Mr. Gubler adds that
the Chamber understands AB 1381 is only the first
step in the process of reforming the LAUSD; one that
is long overdue. “If we want to continue to attract
and retain business – and jobs -- in Los Angeles, we
have to be able to provide our employers with an
educated workforce.”

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has provided
leadership, business development resources,

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation
Awards $7,500 in Grants to Hollywood Nonprofits
HOLLYWOOD, CA -- The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
Community Foundation, which exists to support and
advance the educational, cultural and economic
interests of the Hollywood community – linking
business in partnerships with educational,
governmental and non-profit organizations, has
awarded grants of $2,500/each to three nonprofit
organizations: the HIV & AIDS Legal Services
Alliance, Inc. (HALSA) Housing Eviction and Legal
Prevention Program; the Hollywood Police Activities
League (PAL); and Assistance League of Southern
California’s Family Service Agency’s (FSA) Violence
Prevention and Intervention Program.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community
Foundation is funded from the generous donations of
the Chamber’s one thousand individual and corporate
members. The Foundation has no paid staff – all
services are either donated or underwritten by the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, area businesses and
individual benefactors.
The Foundation’s $2,500 award to HALSA’s Housing
Eviction and Legal Prevention Program (HELP) will
assist HELP in providing eviction-defense legal
support and services to people living with HIV and
AIDS; secure productive employment to help stabilize
their income and retain critical health benefits;
resolve financial obstacles that inhibit independent
living; and address HIV/AIDS-related discrimination
that erodes personal empowerment.
Since its inception in 1997, HALSA has been a
provider of last resort for individuals who have no
other legal service options. To date, the
organization has helped more than 22,000 individuals
improve their living conditions; address economic
barriers to accessing primary care/treatment and
other support services; and enhance re-entry into
the workplace. HALSA is the only organization of
its kind in Los Angeles County dedicated to serving
the HIV/AIDS-related civil legal needs of persons
living with HIV or AIDS.
The Hollywood Police Activities League (PAL) is a
community-based crime prevention program that
provides young people, ages six to seventeen, with
positive alternatives to gangs and drugs. Hollywood
PAL serves hundreds of children and young adults on
a weekly basis throughout the year, offering each
individual positive interaction with police officers
in recreational, educational, athletic and fine arts
activities. The Chamber’s Foundation grant will
help to underwrite some of PAL’s most successful
programs; these include karate, soccer, basketball,
the Junior Police Academy and the Youth Directors
Council, which provides youth with an opportunity to
serve the community, as well as participate in
various educational, recreational and cultural field
trips. Hollywood PAL is a 501 (c) (3) organization
funded entirely by contributions from local
individuals, businesses, foundations and grants.
Assistance League of Southern California’s Family
Service Agency Violence Prevention and Intervention
Program helps augment counseling services for
victims, perpetrators, and witnesses of domestic
violence – many of whom are children. In 2006, the
challenge for Assistance League of Southern
California’s FSA program is that domestic
violence-related calls are on the increase. Grant
monies, such as those provided by the Hollywood
Chamber Community Foundation, help to ensure that
the League’s FSA program will continue, and most
importantly, that no one is turned away from these
services due to an individual or family’s inability
to pay.

Stella Adler to be Honored With Posthumous
Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame
WHO: Honorary Mayor of Hollywood
Johnny Grant
Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce, President/CEO Leron Gubler
Guest speakers: Benicio
Del Toro, Mark Ruffalo and Linda Hope
Accepting the star on
behalf of Ms. Adler will be Ellen Adler (daughter);
Tom Oppenheim (grandson)
and Irene Gilbert, director of Stella Adler L.A.
WHAT: 2,315th Star on the Hollywood
Walk of Fame
WHERE: 6777 Hollywood Boulevard in front
of the Stella Adler Theatre
WHEN: Friday, August 4, at 11:30 a.m.
The late Stella
Adler will be honored with her star on August 4.
Adler was truly the creator of a unique American
approach to acting. She is the only American ever to
have directly studied with the father of modern
acting, Constantine Stanislavsky. She adapted and
developed this work into a practical and valuable
technique through which great acting can be
achieved. After a successful career on Broadway and
in film, she devoted the remainder of her life, more
than 50 years, to teaching her technique. Her list
of alumni reads like a “Who’s Who of Hollywood and
Broadway.” The stars include: Marlon Brando, Benicio
Del Toro, Ed Norton, Warren Beatty, Chris Cooper,
Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Salma Hayek,
Candice Bergen, and many other luminaries.
Adler was active in
political and human rights causes. She instilled in
her students the same sense of responsibility as an
artist and a human being. Most of her alumni remain
involved in major causes because of Adler’s
influence.
The year 2005
marked the 20th anniversary of The Stella
Adler Theatre located on Hollywood Boulevard.

MEDIA ADVISORY
RELIGHTING THE HOLLYWOOD
SIGN;
[No; not that sign.
The other one; right before the Highland Ave. exit
heading south on the “101”]
The Event: Announcement about the relighting
of the Extinguishable Message Sign (EMS) mounted on
the bridge crossing the “101” freeway, immediately
before the Highland Avenue exit, heading south.
The Participants:
Assemblymember Paul Koretz
Councilmember Tom LaBonge
Frank Quon, Deputy District Director, CalTrans
Arvind Manocha, Hollywood Bowl
Jeff Briggs, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
Kerry Morrison, Hollywood Entertainment District BID
Representatives from Hollywood & Highland
Date/Time: Tuesday, July 25, 9 a.m.
Location: On the median strip in front of the
Hollywood Bowl entrance (where the buses park during
concerts). News trucks park on median, all others
park in Lot D/North Fairfield (near Odin), then use
the pedestrian tunnel to access the bus island.
The Significance: Assemblymember Paul Koretz,
Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Caltrans, the Hollywood
Entertainment District BID, and the Chamber worked
together to mitigate traffic congestion problems in
the Hollywood/Highland corridor by relighting this
sign. The group pushed the relighting through in
anticipation of summer congestion due to upcoming
street widening projects, concerts and special
events.
About the Sign: The EMS was originally
installed in April 1992 to notify freeway commuters
when Highland Avenue was congested or closed due to:
-
ongoing freeway/road construction, repairs
-
traffic detours
-
special events at the Hollywood Bowl or on
Hollywood Boulevard [i.e., the Hollywood Christmas
Parade, Walk of Fame ceremonies, award ceremonies,
etc.]
The sign stopped functioning many years ago. During
inspections in the Summer of 2005, it was determined
that electrical connections had been damaged and
vandalized at spots, causing it not to work.
The Sign was originally designed to operate
24/seven, 365 days a year. It is triggered to turn
on when traffic is occupying the off-ramp 35% of the
time, and turn off when traffic occupancy falls
below 21% in a three-minute sampling time. When
triggered by cars backed up on the Highland exit,
the EMS reads:
HIGHLAND AVE. CONGESTED
USE NEXT EXIT
B-Roll/Shots: Because the sign is
inaccessible, visibly, for the press conference we
will have b-roll footage of the sign in operation
available on Beta for the press conference. Shots
available at the press conference include officials
involved and morning traffic congestion on Highland.

HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER
BACKS GOLDBERG TOW BILL;
TOURISM A DETERMINING
FACTOR IN FAVORING AB 2210
HOLLYWOOD, CA – The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors voted unanimously in support of
Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg’s proposed Vehicle
Towing Regulations bill [AB 2210], refusing to
accept unscrupulous (and often illegal) towing
company practices as an effective solution to
dealing with unauthorized vehicles parked on private
property – vehicles, the Chamber contends, that
belong to Hollywood tourists, residents, visitors,
and business people. If the bill passes, it would
spell out legal towing procedures and practices, and
assess stiff penalties and fines on those tow
companies that do not comply.
AB 2210 addresses
known violations of independent towing companies
that attempt to remove vehicles from private
property: by not acquiring proper authorization; by
circumventing the one-hour waiting period required
before a tow; by neglecting to notify local law
enforcement within one hour of a vehicle’s removal;
by charging excessive fees; by only accepting cash
as payment; and by impounding a vehicle at a
facility located beyond a reasonable distance from
the removal point. These practices, which also
include incidents of ‘on-the-spot’ extortion, led to
the legislative proposal’s creation. Certain
incidents involving tow drivers ‘scanning’ private
property for illegally parked vehicles, and
wrongfully removing them, have become a concern as
well.
In 2004, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office
filed the first criminal case in California against
a predatory tow company. According to City Attorney
Rocky Delgadillo, the problem still persists, even
though his office successfully convicted several
predator tow firms during the past two years.
“It is a recipe for disaster that we simply cannot
afford to tolerate,” says Leron Gubler, president
and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
“Everyone in town suffers – especially tourism, a
key contributor to the area economy.” He explains,
“For vacationers and visitors, negative experiences
like being the victim of a predatory towing company
tend to negate the many positive memories they could
be bringing home and sharing with friends and
family. The problem must be dealt with swiftly.”
The Hollywood Chamber believes AB 2210 will
establish clear standards for the industry, and then
enforce the standards by applying heavy fines and
criminal penalties to those maverick firms that
think they are above the law. According to Mr.
Gubler, the bill has the support of legitimate city
/police-contracted towing companies, and of the
California Organization of Police and Sheriffs
(COPS).
For more than 86 years, the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce has provided leadership, business
development resources, networking, and government
affairs programs and services to keep the Hollywood
business and residential communities safe, relevant
and economically vital. Jeffrey C. Briggs of Briggs Law Office is Chair of the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors.
At present, more
than one thousand businesses, professionals and
nonprofits are members of the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce, which is ranked as the second largest
chamber in the City of Los Angeles, and third
largest in the County of Los Angeles.

HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE
TO HOST ANNUAL HOLLYWOOD
ENTERTAINMENT LUNCHEON ON SEPT. 15;
KEYNOTE SPEAKER WILL BE
PRESIDENT/CEO OF MPAA
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Dan Glickman, the former United
States Secretary of Agriculture and the current
President and CEO of the Motion Picture Association
of America, Inc. (MPAA), will address “The State of
the Motion Picture Industry” at the Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Hollywood Entertainment
Luncheon on Friday, September 15. The event will be
held from noon until 1:30 p.m. [registration and
networking begin at 11:30 a.m.] at the historic
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, 7000 Hollywood
Boulevard. Admission is $75 for Chamber members;
$100 for non-members. Reservations are required;
seating is limited. To reserve space or for more
information, contact Rochelle Silsbee, VP of Public
Policy at 323.469.8311 or visit the
Chamber Events at
www.hollywoodchamber.net.
Dan Glickman is regarded by most industry leaders as
the voice and advocate of the American motion
picture, home video and television industries. He
became President and CEO of MPAA in September 2004;
prior to that, Mr. Glickman served as the Director
of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s
John F. Kennedy School of Government (August 2002
through August 2004); U.S. Secretary of Agriculture
(1995 until 2001); and as a respected member of the
U.S. House of Representatives for the Fourth
Congressional District of Kansas (1976 through
1994).
Leron Gubler, president and CEO of the Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce, says “The motion picture
industry in Southern California is the region’s
economic lifeblood – providing jobs; talent;
domestic and international tourism and convention
appeal; and taxes to support the city and state’s
infrastructure, educational, and transportation
improvements and emerging programs and projects.
For these reasons alone, the Hollywood Chamber has
made the industry’s advocacy concerns its top
legislative priority: urging city, state and
federal legislators for tax incentives to stem
runaway film production, and to strongly enforce
existing anti-piracy laws, locally and abroad.”

Commerce has provided leadership, business
development resources, networking, and government

HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER LOOKS FOR INFRASTRUCTURE BOND
PACKAGE
TO
IMPROVE MOBILITY IN THE ENTERTAINMENT CAPITAL, AND
STATE
HOLLYWOOD, CA – As
Hollywood returns to its status as one of the core
contributors to the state’s tourism, entertainment,
housing, and mainstream economy, it does so at a
price: overcrowded streets and highways.
For this reason and
other mobility concerns, the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to
support the entire state infrastructure bond package
proposal, which will be on the November ballot.
Several Assembly bills authored by Senate President
Pro Tem Don Perata and /or Assembly Speaker Nunez
embody the infrastructure bond package, as well as
SB 1266, the $19.75 billion general obligation
transportation bond.
Hollywood Chamber
President and CEO Leron Gubler says that passage of
the infrastructure bond package is critical to
making less-congested mobility possible for everyone
who lives, works, and visits the area, and the
state. “Hollywood’s business community has invested
heavily in the area’s revitalization effort.
Approval of this package would be pivotal in
expediting the movement of goods and people here.”
With approximately 4,500 more housing units expected
to surface in Hollywood, Mr. Gubler also feels that
future infrastructure demands and pressure on area
livability will only increase “unless voters pass
this package.” He adds, “It does include urban
parklands funds to help finance the development of
more open space, and ease the anticipated growing
pains.”
Another mobility
concern for Hollywood involves the high volume of
goods that move through the neighboring ports of Los
Angeles and Long Beach. These two ports handle
nearly one-half of the shipping containers traveling
in and out of the nation, yet California ranks
second-to-last among all 50 states in terms of
transportation spending. If voters agree in
November, the package will fund improvements for
these and other California ports, as well as the
state’s highways, schools, security, levees, air
quality, and more.
For more than 86
years, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has
provided leadership, business development resources,
networking, and government affairs programs and
services to keep the Hollywood business and
residential communities safe, relevant and
economically vital. Jeffrey C. Briggs of Briggs Law Office is
Chair of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors.
At present, more than one thousand businesses,
professionals and nonprofits are members of the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which is ranked as
the second largest chamber in the City of Los
Angeles and third largest in the County of Los
Angeles.
